After another sorry day of chaos and confusion from @pritipatel, the gap between the British Govt and the British public on Ukrainian refugees is bigger than ever.
1. Patel tells MPs: “It’s wrong to say we are turning people back [at Calais], we are absolutely not”.
But UK posters in Calais tell refugees to apply online or at visa centres in Paris/Brussels
2. Patel tells MPs: “We have set up a bespoke VAC (Visa Application Centre) en route to Calais but away from the port”.
Reality: no such centre yet exists.
3. Patel tells MPs elderly aunts of Ukrainians in the UK are not being denied entry.
Reality: that's exactly what Ukrainians are reporting.
4. Patel last Mon: "I can confirm that through this extension alone an additional 100,000 Ukrainians will be able to seek sanctuary in the UK."
Patel last Tues: "We shd be very honest + level with everyone that we do not know the number of people who will seek to come to the UK"
The charitable interpretation: Patel is trying to bounce No.10 into being more liberal, announcing policy before it's agreed.
The less charitable interpretation: she's so defensive about criticism, she overspins plans/ambitions
Govt backbenchers find it hard to defend the line, when the line changes so much.
When asked about her performance at the despatch box today, one Tory MP simply rolled their eyes.
Tragedy is the UK has much to be proud of in its response to Ukraine, leading on supplying defensive weapons, training troops, bank [as opposed to oligarch] sanctions etc.
All of which @ZelenskyyUa will surely praise us for tmrw.
So why is Govt overselling its refugee response?

Featuring this startling new analysis by @DrSimEvans of @CarbonBrief:
If all 649 onshore wind and solar farms that *already* have planning permission got built, the electricity they would produce would exceed ALL the gas the UK is currently importing from Russia.
Why haven't they been built? The lack of a clear route to market. But that could all change this summer when @KwasiKwarteng holds the contracts for difference auction. If he expands even further the cap for onshore wind, it could make a big difference.
New: Defence Secretary @BWallaceMP announces to MPs that UK has decided to supply Star Streak high velocity anti aircraft missiles to Ukraine 🇺🇦 govt.
"It's vital that Ukraine retains its ability to fly."
Wallace adds that UK increasing direct humanitarian aid to Ukraine to make it the largest bilateral donor in the world.
.@JohnHealey_MP praises the decision to supply Star Streak missiles to Ukraine (and reveals he and @Keir_Starmer will travel to visit British troops in Estonia tonight)
Here's more on why the UK needs to do more to help Ukraine's airforce:
.@BWallaceMP made clear yday on @BBCr4today that Poland plan to supply MiGs to Ukraine would have to be a bilateral one, not a Nato one - tho Nato would stand by it. But the US clearly felt using its base in Germany as conduit was a mistake.
More here:
Slovakia PM on @BBCr4today notably doesn't rule out sending its own MiG-29s to Ukraine. Says discussions have to be private and Ukraine has right to receive 'gifts' of such weapons.
Feels like the idea is not dead
The remarkable thing is that Ukrainian Air Force 🇺🇦 has not been overwhelmed by their Russian counterparts.
Echoes of the 'Few' in the RAF in 1940. But they're running out of time.
More here:
.@BWallaceMP on Putin's invasion of Ukraine on @BBCr4today:
“This will be Putin’s end, this country and so it should be. It will be an impossible task to occupy such a people and a country.”
V interesting from @BWallaceMP on idea of Poland gifting MiG fighters to Ukraine. Says it's Poland's 'choice'.
Warns "the blowback could be on the Polish people". "It’s upto you, we understand why you want to do it…we will stand by you" as bilateral and Nato ally
Wallace also reveals he wants to make a statement to Parliament some point this week to update MPs on military and other help provided by UK to Ukraine
Last week, Patel talked of a "bespoke humanitarian route". Today, No10 talked of a "tailored" approach.
The metaphor has risks. Instead of a new, bespoke suit, seems the Home Office plans adjustments to an off-the-peg outfit, one that still looks pretty thin and shabby to many
In the Commons @pritipatel anounces: “I can confirm we have set up a bespoke VAC (Visa Application Centre] en route to Calais but away from the port because we have to prevent that surge taking place..."
