Today is #IWD2022 this year’s theme is #BreakTheBias - which I am going to celebrate with a thread of ten amazing women I have encountered in UK Agriculture & academia through my work as a farmer, PhD researcher, with @PastureForLife & as Co-founder of Regen Women on the Land.
First up - the marvellously charismatic, passionate and extremely knowledgeable @DrDowhittle - what an incredible force for good in the ag and vet sectors 🙌
Next is @CowNorfolk of @OldHallFm - who has been leading the change from commodity food production to localised, short supply chains with her gorgeous #JerseyGodesses
I remember meeting @WhitriggsLesley properly at Groundswell last year, and am continually blown away by the incredible way she and Robert have expertly enabled effective succession planning to move the farm forward.
She’s good at hiding in photos too 🙈
My pal @cat_frampton gets a big “whoop” 🎉 for her beautiful art depicting life on a wild, Dartmoor farm (and the tiny birds 😍) + for being the latest in a long line of wonderful farming women, working as part of the farm ecosystem to enable & celebrate life in the wild places.
Next up is @wigsandwords who asks excellent questions, challenges the status quo and is about to publish her latest book which tells stories of life, land and a farming revolution and I CAN’T WAIT to read it!!
I’ve had the joy of working with @LornaCTweets on some agroecology workshopping recently - an agricultural ecologist who is so enthusiastic about getting ecology students onto farms 👏👏
Not only is she responsible for the best charcuterie in 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 she took a cow pat in a cheese cloche on a train to COP26 💩😆
It’s the indomitable Denise from @PeelhamFarm
The wonderful @kirstyMTait joined the 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 @NFFNUK team last year and has been doing a great job developing projects, engaging with politicians and importantly, keeping the steering group on track - thanks for all your work Kirsty 😘
I obviously have to include my wonderful friend, colleague and collaborator @ClemSandison for her passion, commitment to inclusion and for all the organising, supporting and phenomenal cooking she does. Much loved and appreciated by many 💃💃
And last up I’m going to celebrate myself - not enough of us pat ourselves on the back for the work we do, the efforts we make or the challenges we overcome. It’s tough being a woman in ag.
So here’s to me, and all my amazing sisters on #IWD2022 😘
Nope...couldn't leave it at ten 🙈
Here are some more amazing women 👇👇
If you love a hedge, then you'll love @FavColour_Green - she's full of wonderful knowledge and advice about hedge management...and she went and developed a blummin healthy hedgerows app! hedgerowsurvey.ptes.org/healthy-hedger…
I've been so lucky to meet @BalsarGlen's Heather Close who farms in SW Scotland, she is a wonderful woman who is incredibly thoughtful, curious and passionate about what she does. She often shares some real knowledge gems 🙌

In the current debate about the @treesforlifeuk announcement to import 15 or so "Tauros" cattle to their Dundreggan site near Inverness, one thing has really come to light for me in terms of levels of support (or not) expressed here... a wee thread 1/
The majority of folk I have seen so far who are supportive of the announcement appear (and I know appearances can be deceiving) to know very little about managing cattle. 2/
And the folk who think it's really not a good idea, generally have quite a lot of experience managing cattle.

And some of us even make a living from managing cattle in rewilding contexts. 3/ Image

This video from Matthew & the one he links to by @farmermat1 are really interesting as very practical applied examples of supply chain net zero aims and what a more land sparing approach looks like on actual farms.

What I find fascinating are the cross overs between systems 🧵1
We hear @ThrimbyFarms talking about increasing output (quadrupling cattle numbers) and using profits to invest in nature positive outcomes - so production + a mostly “hedges and edges” approach…the net zero bit comes from intensification so the emissions are diluted by numbers 2
He talks about rewiggling water courses and planting hedges, creating scrub - these are separate to production…on-farm land sparing.

In a land sharing farm system we would probably undertake similar actions but use their presence to contribute to output…we would not be able 3

Some thoughts on biodiversity loss - and why I think farmers are feeling defensive… 🧵

The State of Nature report identified a 13% decline in the average abundance of wildlife in the UK since the 1970s

This means fewer plants, birds and invertebrates. 1/14
And many researchers point to the intensification of agriculture as a leading cause - which isn’t wrong for farmland birds for example, but there’s no doubt the increase in cars, built areas, rubbish and pollution have all had a huge impact on nature and ecosystem health 2/14
Social media has become a battleground of folk shaming farmers for cutting hedges, dredging waterways, killing moles or using chemicals with farmers desperately trying to have their voice heard 3/14

With the current debate between @GeorgeMonbiot and @AllanRSavory leaving folk on both sides struggling to feel heard (including me) I thought I’d try and explain a bit more about why the grazing GM refers to and the grazing AS refer to are not the same - bear with me! 🧵 1/20
Generally, research into grazing relies on models that are based on set stocked systems - simply number of animals per acre, with an assumption they are there continuously. And continuous grazing has been pretty standard for a lot of farmers for a fairly long time 2/20
In set stocked systems, animals are either there or not - it becomes a binary choice of graze or exclude and most grazing research relies on this binary. Livestock presence vs livestock exclusion with no shades of grey in between 3/20

Fascinating chat with colleagues over dinner tonight about decisions relating to food - every single food choice I make includes consideration of trade offs and impact…and I often forget that the vast majority of folk don’t live that way.

1/6
As farmers we ask consumers to make conscientious food purchasing decisions, we ask people to think about buying local, or shopping intentionally or eating seasonally.

2/6
The reality is that hardly anyone does this in the UK. Tiny minorities who are privileged to have head space and decision making capacity to consider this stuff, or for whom eating food is a political act and so choose their purchases accordingly.

I do quite a lot of webinars - and tonight’s was brilliant, for a number of reasons - a wee thread 🧵

1/6
Firstly it was an all female panel 💃💃 💃
This is important because women’s voices are under represented in agriculture and ag policy - and have been for a LONG TIME - so this felt like strong solidarity for women in ag from @ScotLINK

2/6
Secondly, the panel organisers are paying a speaker fee (and so did @FutureFarmerYAS last week) - giving up time on farm can impact profitability and asks for “extra” from contributors. Paying a fee and valuing our contribution is hugely appreciated and should be the norm
