Today is #IWD2022 this year’s theme is #BreakTheBias - which I am going to celebrate with a thread of ten amazing women I have encountered in UK Agriculture & academia through my work as a farmer, PhD researcher, with @PastureForLife & as Co-founder of Regen Women on the Land.
First up - the marvellously charismatic, passionate and extremely knowledgeable @DrDowhittle - what an incredible force for good in the ag and vet sectors 🙌
Next is @CowNorfolk of @OldHallFm - who has been leading the change from commodity food production to localised, short supply chains with her gorgeous #JerseyGodesses
I remember meeting @WhitriggsLesley properly at Groundswell last year, and am continually blown away by the incredible way she and Robert have expertly enabled effective succession planning to move the farm forward.
She’s good at hiding in photos too 🙈
My pal @cat_frampton gets a big “whoop” 🎉 for her beautiful art depicting life on a wild, Dartmoor farm (and the tiny birds 😍) + for being the latest in a long line of wonderful farming women, working as part of the farm ecosystem to enable & celebrate life in the wild places.
Next up is @wigsandwords who asks excellent questions, challenges the status quo and is about to publish her latest book which tells stories of life, land and a farming revolution and I CAN’T WAIT to read it!!
I’ve had the joy of working with @LornaCTweets on some agroecology workshopping recently - an agricultural ecologist who is so enthusiastic about getting ecology students onto farms 👏👏
Not only is she responsible for the best charcuterie in 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 she took a cow pat in a cheese cloche on a train to COP26 💩😆
It’s the indomitable Denise from @PeelhamFarm
The wonderful @kirstyMTait joined the 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 @NFFNUK team last year and has been doing a great job developing projects, engaging with politicians and importantly, keeping the steering group on track - thanks for all your work Kirsty 😘
I obviously have to include my wonderful friend, colleague and collaborator @ClemSandison for her passion, commitment to inclusion and for all the organising, supporting and phenomenal cooking she does. Much loved and appreciated by many 💃💃
And last up I’m going to celebrate myself - not enough of us pat ourselves on the back for the work we do, the efforts we make or the challenges we overcome. It’s tough being a woman in ag.
So here’s to me, and all my amazing sisters on #IWD2022 😘
Nope...couldn't leave it at ten 🙈
Here are some more amazing women 👇👇
If you love a hedge, then you'll love @FavColour_Green - she's full of wonderful knowledge and advice about hedge management...and she went and developed a blummin healthy hedgerows app! hedgerowsurvey.ptes.org/healthy-hedger…
I've been so lucky to meet @BalsarGlen's Heather Close who farms in SW Scotland, she is a wonderful woman who is incredibly thoughtful, curious and passionate about what she does. She often shares some real knowledge gems 🙌

I am frankly appalled that @NFUStweets are calling for those areas identified as Ecological Focus Areas to be brought into production as a response to a humanitarian crisis. And this is why 🧵/1
The horrendous situation in Ukraine is absolutely going to have an impact on global food commodities, and that is the real issue here - that our food is traded as a commodity, on a global scale leading, particularly in the UK’s case, to an over reliance on imported food /2
An obvious response is to grow more food here, right? And isn’t that what the NFUS are calling for? Well, no. /3
