It's #InternationalWomensDay2022 #IWD2022

Women and non-binary people are still systematically excluded from economic thinking and decision making.

A thread🧵.
1/ Students

Worryingly, the number of women studying economics is backsliding.

The proportion of UK economics undergraduates who are women was only 27% in 2019 - down from 31% in 2002.

2/ Academics

Women make up 15% of economics professors. Only 8% of academic posts are held by Black women and women of colour.

At no point between 2012–2018 was a Black woman employed as a professor of economics anywhere in the UK, @RoyalEconSoc has shown.
3/ Policymakers

Only 27% of seats on the @BankofEngland’s main policymaking committees are women.

All 121 governors in the Bank of England’s history have been men.

4/ Women face routine discrimination & harassment, and find their work devalued by peers.

In a survey of American economists, nearly half of women reported having been discriminated against on the basis of gender, compared to 3% of men.

5/ Diverse identities and perspectives = better policymaking.

Studies have shown women economists are more likely to support government intervention and environmental regulation, and to be concerned about inequality.

6/ Economics helps us make key decisions about jobs, resources, housing, care, and infrastructure.

We need everyone in society to be able to take part.
7/ Follow & support organisations doing essential work to diversify economics, like:

Who did we miss?
