This is Kharkiv, a city constantly under shelling. This building is ten minutes' walk from her house. My grandmother did not feel safe, so she got out. That was when we encountered the hell of British bureaucracy. 2/6
Long story short: evacuating my grandmother out of a warzone was the easy part. She is now stuck in Krakow awaiting a visa appointment. The earliest available is in two weeks. 3/6
My mother filled in the form. We were asked if gran had been involved in war crimes. She is a victim of war crimes. They asked for her bank statement. Her bank in Kharkiv is razed to rubble, and she fled with just the clothes on her back, passport and phone. 4/6
Grandma has already been to the UK. She has passed visa checks multiple times. They have her data. This is a waste of her time, our time, and the govt's time. We're fortunate. We have the time, money, support, and fortitude to navigate this bureaucratic labyrinth. 5/6
But I am not asking for my family. I ask on behalf of all Ukrainian refugees trying to join their UK families. Put pressure on the govt. Write to your MPs. Say WAIVE VISAS NOW.
Thank you. 6/6.
