If you have to read one article today: @walkerbragman and @alexkotch reveal the timeline of Koch dark money from March 2020 to today. First, Koch saw profits in homeschooling/private school models, then later, they decided it was time to "get back to work." #ProfitsOverFamilies🧵
After decades of fighting #TeachersUnions, pushing #DefundPublicEd, and #SchoolPrivatization, in March 2020 Koch's Cato institute advocated for school district choice (virtual v. in-person), local control, and even advocating "unschooling."
Other Koch dark $ groups pushed this message: Yes Every Kid, Heritage, Mercatus (free market at GMU), Koch Institute, Americans for Prosperity, State Policy Network, and the Independent Womens Forum. #IWF is local #DarkMoney central: Zoldak, Nomani, Rosiak, Langton, Gunlock, etc.
Of course, quite soon the Dark Money narrative shifted as they realized that their profit margins were hit as parents without childcare had to leave the workplace, leading to a labor shortage.
This also created a market where labor could demand more from their employers!
In May 2020, "these interests began to use the same playbook to try to force schools back to normal....force a return to normalcy and boost corporate profits." Koch groups (Hoover institution, AEI) boosted this message leveraging low income student needs. hoover.org/research/eric-…
July 2020, 2 days after Trump's "schools must open" speech, "Koch-backed reopening push kicked into high gear." Hoover senior fellow Scott Atlas (Hoover Snr Fellow), soon be tapped as Trump's senior COVID advisor, called for reopening schools. kusi.com/dr-scott-atlas…
Atlas argued "that schools were an “essential business” and that the risk COVID presented to anyone under the age of 18 was incredibly low." Heritage and AEI jumped on the bandwagon to amplify this message.
Sound familiar?? OpenFCPS, #FfxParentsAssoc, and GOP echoed this.
Did you know Koch was behind the Great Barrington Declaration demanding governments "to pursue herd immunity to COVID through “natural infection” while implementing only nebulous “focused protection” for the vulnerable"? Also, Koch started this fiction. aier.org/article/the-da…
August 12, 2020, the #IWF "called on schools to reopen across the country, citing detrimental impacts on student learning and mental well-being." In April 2021, #IWF circulated a form letter for parents to demand the end to mask mandates.👿 washingtonpost.com/politics/2021/…
October 2021, Americans for Prosperity (Koch!!) "spent $950,000 to boost Youngkin — far more than any other outside spending group." #DarkMoney and associated groups (Coalition for TJ, QpenFCPS, Virginia Project) elected #Youngkin in November 2021. americansforprosperity.org/americans-for-…
Dec '21-Jan '22, as Omicron & child hospitalizations surged, Cato claimed "Omicron-related school closures were politically motivated & the fault of teachers’ unions." The Federalist told parents to protest "mandates, quarantines, & other perceived affronts to personal freedom."
“If the parents wanted to be truly effective — as well as truly honest — they would pull their children from schools en masse until problems of [] were resolved favorably,” wrote Federalist exec editor Joy Pullman, graduate of Koch-funded conservative Christian Hillsdale College.
All of this fear-mongering by Koch $ affiliates and those who listen to them (I'm talking to you @FfxParentsAssoc) ignores the facts: There is next to no information saying masks 😷are harmful to children, much less restrict breathing or cause psychological harm. @fcpsnews
Recent shifts to mask-optional schools and CDC guidance has confused parents despite polls showed strong support (70%) for universal mask mandates. It is RW campaigns, not facts, that drove the end of universal masking across nearly the entire U.S. (fin) dailyposter.com/how-dark-money…
Thank you to 1) @asosin who I meant to quote tweet, and 2) @walkerbragman and @alexkotch for connecting the dots on this timeline.
I've been following local dark $ for a long time, but even *I* was blown away by this article.

Thank you, @fcpsnews school board for adding your voice to support the medically-fragile students who are harmed by the politically-motivated Youngkin E.O. and the thoughtless SB 739.
Do I like wearing a mask? No.
Will I wear a mask to protect my community? Hell, yes.
For anyone who would like to see how the Fairfax County Parent's Association (formerly known as OpenFCPS) REALLY feels about school children, check out their remarks below--after screaming for in-person school, they are happy to deny it to others.
Some of us have reviewed the amicus brief provided by #FfxParentsAssoc and find it to be "lacking" coherence, basis in law, and knowledge of how public education works. Not surprising since many (most?) of the FCPA do not have kids in FCPS!!

Clearly, my feathers are ruffled over the #FfxParentsAss shirty amicus brief. Here are their insensitive, privileged, and gross comments sharing why THEIR children MUST be maskless so that MEDICALLY-FRAGILE kids should be kicked out of school. 🧵
It starts with one of the more reasonable openFCPSers asking a question: "Since the beginning, we have argued that students who require special services are MOST IN NEED OF IN-PERSON school...I thought we stood for open schools for EVERY STUDENT."
Now watch how the leaders (Jenna, JoJo, Eillen/Dennis, etc) all back-peddle to rationalize THROWING KIDS out of school.
And Joanne Sears, private school parent, criticizing @fcpsnews filing an amicus brief to PROTECT EDUCATION FOR STUDENTS. Dennis = Eilleen (also has sued FCPS news)

A friend shared comments on the brief, so I will provide their expert annotations below in a brief thread.
No matter what, don't forget how @FFXParentsAssoc wrote an amicus brief to EXCLUDE medically fragile students from in-person school. 🧵
This friend points out that #FfxParentsAss IS partisan, mostly wealthy, composed of non-FCPS parents, and astroturf in nature. They are happy to have "separate but equal" schools so that they are not "inconvenienced" by public health standards. ImageImage
Their legal arguments are flawed and cherry-pick the legal reasoning that favors their case, while ignoring the VIRGINIA CONSTITUTION! ImageImage

@FFXParentsAssoc filed an Amicus Brief filed on Seaman and Lyons v. Commonwealth of Virginia (3:22-cv-6-NKM) where they assert that THEIR rights to maskless in-person school are greater than those of universally masked and medically fragile and disabled students.🧵
Before I share anything, here is a trip down @FFXParentsAssoc memory lane covering HOW IMPORTANT IN-PERSON education is.🤔 FCPA sister group, NOVA PSA...ImageImageImage
Of course, there is always more. Here is how SUPPOSEDLY important special education students are to #FfxParentsAss. 1/10/2022ImageImageImage
