NOW: #FactsFirstPH conducts its first research briefing on Friday, March 11, with Prof. Cheryll Ruth Santiago of DLSU and Prof. Edson Tandoc Jr. of Nanyang Technological University.
WATCH LIVE --- #FactsFirstPH Research Briefing: 'Scaffolding our notions of trust'
The research, called 'Scaffolding our notions of trust', gets into why we trust the information and its sources that we see online and what this says about the way we choose our next set of leaders. #FactsFirstPH
WATCH:
The research found that most young people generally can differentiate true and false information by actively looking for evidence. They identify trustworthy evidence by checking its source. #FactsFirstPH
WATCH:
What does the youth count as information they can trust? The study counts a number of factors: information shared within the family, lessons learned in school, and media consumption, among others. #FactsFirstPH
WATCH:
Tandoc: Doubt- and gossip-seeding is a strategy by "microcelebrities" who use coded and vague language in the titles, headlines, and even body of the content to evade accountability. #FactsFirstPH
WATCH:
In the case of video streaming platform YouTube, its Community Guidelines do not explicitly prohibit spreading false information. Their efforts to raise authoritative voices and reduce borderline content is not consistent across countries.
Tandoc says microcelebrities challenge the status quo by presenting their "hard-earned" facts, which they claim are a product of their "research." #FactsFirstPH
WATCH:
The study points out that microcelebrities create a credible image by saying that their content is the product of "careful and in-depth fact-finding."
At the same time, they cast doubt and hostility toward information gatekeepers such as journalists.
How do we hold these microcelebrities/influencers accountable?
Soriano: We point out the need to do further investigative research to see how these microcelebrities are embedded in the greater architecture of disinformation. #FactsFirstPH
WATCH:
Soriano says there is a need to map out and reveal who is politically backing these microcelebrities. #FactsFirstPH | via @aloisinika
WATCH:
@aloisinika Tandoc points out: There is some level of confidence among young people, who say they can discern fact from fake, but how do we do it exactly? #FactsFirstPH | via @aloisinika
WATCH:
@aloisinika Soriano: The illusion of discovery of oneself is the center of the piece. It's an important feeling that we discover.... When we feel we have discovered, perhaps we have to ask deeper what led us to this feeling? #FactsFirstPH | via @aloisinika
WATCH:
@aloisinika Soriano: How we trust people, media personality, candidates.... We are kind of nudging to shift the conversation: Why do we trust this or distrust other sectors, and what led us to this conclusion? #FactsFirstPH | via @aloisinika
WATCH:
@aloisinika Soriano and Tandoc's study was premised on a strong point: There has to be a shift from the question “Did you check the source of information?” to “Why and how have you come to trust that source of information and distrust others?” in combating disinformation. #FactsFirstPH
@aloisinika Any social media wishlist? Tandoc says there are no incentives for users who flag dubious content.
This is especially true for users who do not like to get corrected online, Tandoc adds. #FactsFirstPH | via @aloisinika
WATCH:
@aloisinika Soriano on content moderation: You can put down one video, but there's a network... They're able to wield power over the audience. #FactsFirstPH | via @aloisinika

@aloisinika And that's a wRap! Watch the whole research briefing here:
