Here's a thread with some interesting statistics on the recently concluded #UttarPradeshElections2022
Let’s start with the Congress. Under the leadership of Priyanka Gandhi, 97% of the Congress Party candidates lost security deposits, i.e., 387 out of 399 candidates.
Congress received 21,51,234 votes in total. This translates into a per seat vote of 5,391 only.
The margin of victory in one of the two seats won by Congress (Pharendra) was less than NOTA votes. BJP’s Bajrang Bahadur Singh lost to Virendra Chaudhary of Congress by 1246 votes, whereas NOTA received 1484 votes.
When talking about Congress, it’s important to talk about Amethi and Rae Bareli. In Amethi, Congress stood fourth with a vote share of only 7.4%. Similarly, in Rae Bareli, Congress’ vote share was 6.5% only.
UP Congress Committee President Ajay Kumar Lallu, contesting from Tamkuhi Raj, won both 2012 and 2017 assembly election. However, he stood third during this election. BJP’s Asim Kumar registered a victory here.
Let’s talk about AAP, which fielded 349 candidates. All of them lost security deposits.
AAP’s vote share of 0.38% was less than the vote share of NOTA (0.69%). AAP received 3,47,192 votes in total, i.e., less than 1000 votes per candidate.
Let’s look at NOTA’s performance. NOTA received 6,37,304 votes. The margins of loss for 22 candidates were less than the NOTA votes in their respective constituencies.
In Chandpur, Swami Omvesh of Samajwadi Party defeated BJP’s Kamlesh Saini by 234 votes. NOTA received 854 votes here.

Similarly, in Nakur constituency, Dharam Singh Saini of SP lost to Mukesh Choudhary of BJP by 315 votes only. NOTA received 710 votes here.
BSP lost security deposits in 290 out of 403 seats. It won Rasara seat with 43.8% vote share.
‘Others’ won 2 seats, both in Pratapgarh district – Babaganj and Kunda constituencies. These seats went to Raghuraj Pratap Singh’s (aka Raja Bhaiya) newly formed Jansatta Dal Loktantrik Party.
Before moving to Samajwadi Party and BJP+, it’s important to highlight the statistics of an interesting constituency, Doomariyaganj, known for narrow margin of victory. Saiyada Khatoon, contesting from Samajwadi Party, defeated BJP’s Raghvendra Pratap Singh by 771 votes only.
In the 2017 election, it witnessed the lowest margin of victory. BJP’s Raghvendra Pratap Singh defeated Saiyada Khatoon (contesting from BSP) by 171 votes. Similarly, in 2012, Saiyada Khatoon, lost narrowly to Peace Party’s Malik Mohd Kamal Yusuf by 1589 votes.
Let’s talk about the second largest party. Samajwadi Party didn’t win even a single seat in Gorakhpur and Mirzapur Divisions.
Samajwadi Party won more seats than BJP+ in 4 divisions:
Saharanpur (SP+ 9 vs BJP+ 7)
Moradabad (SP+ 17 vs BJP+ 10)
Ayodhya (SP+ 13 vs BJP+ 12)
Azamgarh (SP+ 17 vs BJP+ 3)
Finally, let’s talk about BJP’s stellar performance. 11 of its candidates secured victory by a margin of 1 lac + votes.
Out of total 75 districts, BJP+ won 100% of the seats in 28 districts. These 28 districts alone gave BJP+ 146 seats, i.e., >50% of its total seats.
BJP retained all 8 assembly seats in NCR (Gautam Budh Nagar and Ghaziabad), including some with significantly high margin. In Sahibabad constituency Sunil Kumar Sharma’s victory margin was 2.1 lac votes.
Pankaj Singh of BJP retained NOIDA seat by a margin of 1,81,513 votes. He won the 2017 assembly election also with a margin of 1 lac+ votes.
BJP didn’t win a single seat in the following 5 districts. Shamli, Kaushambi, Ambedkar Nagar, Azamgarh, Ghazipur. All 28 seats in these districts went to Samajwadi Party.
Only 3 candidates of BJP lost security deposits as against 6 candidates of Samajwadi Party.
Foot note: AIMIM, Shiv Sena and CPI fielded 95, 36 and 35 candidates respectively. All of them lost security deposits. Needless to say that their vote share was less than NOTA.
