To those calling on Ukraine to surrender because they can't stand watching the horrors of war: that's not going to happen. Russia wants to destroy Ukraine, in one way or another. Get a grip, sanction Russian oil and gas, send more weapons to Ukrainians
Ukrainians cannot surrender and they won't do it to make you happy. They know too well what happened in Russian-occupied territories since 2014: Ukrainians killed, put in secret prisons, tortured. This will happen again on a huge scale, if Russia is allowed to take more land
Ukrainians fight so fiercely because they know that this war is for their very existence. They value freedom and independence they obtained 30 years ago, after centuries of struggle. So-called democratic values that are shallow for so many in the West are a real thing for them
This is not just war between Russia and Ukraine. It's a war between democracy and tyranny. Between future and past. Between innovation and backwardness. Between humanity and cruelty. For the sake of everything that is good in this world, for the sake of hope, Ukraine should win.

I want to share here an opinion by Volodymyr Sheiko, director of the Ukrainian Institute - a major institution promoting Ukrainian culture in the world. A thread.
'In order to discuss or report on Russia’s war on Ukraine it is essential to understand the nature of the conflict'/1
'Russia’s attempts to pacify, consume, homogenise, subdue, and colonise Ukraine have been going on for centuries.
Today’s Russian invasion is a neocolonial war on a sovereign and peaceful country, an attempt to restore Russia’s imperial geopolitical blueprint'/2
'Ukraine’s resistance is a decolonial struggle to break away from the former empire and to continue nurturing a pro-Western political nation. Therefore, both countries’ existential objectives are mutually exclusive'/3

I got a call today from a friend who was unreachable for two weeks. She said she and her extended family were trapped under Russian occupation in a village on the outskirts of Kyiv. They went to a dacha there on the first day of war on Feb 24, hoping it would be safe
Instead, the village was occupied by Russian army and they were unable to leave for 12 days: it was too dangerous to step out of house because soldiers shot civilians. They ate two times a day and very little. There were children with them, the youngest under one year.
Finally, yesterday they were able to leave for Kyiv with volunteers taking people there on a dangerous road under Russian bullets. They checked whether that person was to be trusted because, as they told me, some drivers say they go to Kyiv, and instead bring people to Belarus

Russian occupation forces torture the staff of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant they captured four days ago, Ukraine energy minister German Galushchenko said. 'There are about 500 Russian soldiers and 50 units of heavy equipment inside the station' 🧵facebook.com/10005225909387…
'A breakdown at a nuclear power plant due to the use of weapons by Russian troops will lead to a disaster for the whole of Europe. The responsibility for this will be entirely on Russia', he said
'If a breakdown happens, Europeans will be forced to switch the comfort of their homes to radiation shelters. We must stop Russia's nuclear terrorism together. We must do it now – until it's too late', Ukraine's energy minister urged

Poi assolto in appello e cassazione. Nessuno mai si è scusato
