SEFF remembers UDR Pte John Hardy, 48, previously in TA, married with 2 sons, ambushed 33 yrs ago, 14/3/89 by 2 PIRA gunmen at close range as he drove his lorry into a loading bay at an abattoir in Granville, dying a short time later in hospital.

John was popular & active ...

Unity in Remembrance
On Fri night a Service of Christian unity was held in St Columb's Cathedral, L'derry where SEFF facilitated bringing together victims from across the community who've been impacted by violence 50 yrs ago in what's considered the worst year of 'The Troubles..

..(death toll) - 1972.
We face into 30 yrs of 50th Anniversaries of events & we felt it important to recognise it.

In the Cathedral were innocents impacted by both republican & loyalist terror from across these islands. Others opted out & that is deeply regrettable.

Hopefully..

..a time may come when they will be willing to engage in wider communal remembrance, understanding the need to express solidarity with the loss & injustice experienced by their own neighbours.

1972 was a truly brutal year with almost 500 deaths with over 4,000 injured. Many ...

SEFF remembers Ronnie Funston, 28, Protestant, worked on his family farm at Lowery nr Pettigo at border with RoI where he lived with his parents, had left UDR almost 8 yrs before he was shot dead by 2 IRA terrorists at 8:00 am on 13/3/84 as he was about to feed cattle.
He was ..

..sitting in the tractor cab when the gunmen emerged from the undergrowth to shoot him.

His mother discovered his body. She told the May/84 inquest, "As I was walking towards the silo pits the next thing I heard was automatic gunfire. I was about 75 to 100 yds away. After ....

SEFF remembers Anne Owens, 22, RC comptometer operator & her friend Janet Bereen, 21, RC radiographer, murdered by PIRA bomb attack on the packed Abercorn Bar in central Belfast on 16:30, 4/3/72, regarded as one of the most horrific incidents of 'The Troubles.'

Both went in ...

..for coffee after shopping .

Belfast was crowded with shoppers & 70 more people were injured, many badly mutilated.
The coroner described the incident as "pathological murder of the most depraved kind".

Anne was from Chichester Avenue and had worked for the NI Electricity ..

..Board. She was also injured in an earlier explosion at the board's hq.

Meanwhile Janet’s family were all heavily involved in health/medicine with her mother, brother & father having occupied the roles of nurse, psychiatrist & a senior anaesthetist respectively at the RVH. ..

SEFF remembers Damien Trainor, 25, RC mechanic, murdered with his Protestant friend, Philip Allen, 34, by LVF on 3/3/98. Both from Poyntzpass.

Damien's 24-hr motor recovery vehicle (with his name painted on the side & of which he was very proud) was parked outside the Railway ..

bar, Poyntzpass.

Just after 21:00, 2 gunmen entered the bar & ordered 6 customers to lie on the floor then opened fire with hand guns. 2 other customers were seriously injured.

The dying & injured were being comforted while waiting for help to arrive. The parents of both ...

arrived almost immediately & were able to talk to their sons before they slipped into unconsciousness.

Philip & Damien both died around 22:00 in Newry's Daisy Hill Hosp.
