how image management is now fast becoming the new normal to politics. What now matters is projection on TV and social media rather than actual deliverable.

Punjab government allocates 85 lakhs for televising oath ceremony.
Image Management is about projecting a profile of politicians on TV like a story. Its basis is less 'outcomes' and more 'profile building' through regular televised and social media.
21/ 3/ Again another piece in @scroll_in where flags were erected at massive costs to exchequer (while homelessness, unemployment and crime continues to remain a problem) as part of the Image Management exercise. scroll.in/article/100128…
21/ 4/ @thewire_in covers a similar controversy with #AAP where it spent 7 crores towards advertising a project whose entire costs were less than the advertising. thewire.in/politics/aap-g…
21/ 5/ All these put together lead to the question: is managing the perception of the public through advertising and saturation of messaging the solution to previous mismanagement by earlier governments?
This is the real question at heart of AAP's opportunity in Punjab.
22/
Chief problem with Image Management is the extreme hype coupled with unrealism.
Trap it creates for the new political leadership is that it buoys public expectation to levels which require more Image Management.
1 Absence of any clear 'deliverable' with a 'timeline'
2 Absence of attaching responsibility for the authority given to a functionary
3 Clear demands of accountability on basis of statements/promises made earlier.
22/ 4/2
Its for this precise reason that all those who use Image Management - whether Modi promoting disgusting bigotry packaged in many shades or now AAP - promoting good governance packaged and advertised, do not come out with such clear schedules and timelines.
22/ 4/3
Thus, the cycle - Image Management leads to more of the same trying to maintain its votes through message saturation.
Real issues remains missing. Without accountability, there is no governance outcome. And thus, forcing politicians to return to more Image Management.
23/
A departure from the interviews that were given before the elections where the two were present with Kejriwal taking more tougher questions.
Image Management is controlling the conversation of the public in order to break away the Authority-Decision-Accountability-Feedback chain associated with political leaders.
24/3
Central to this is the need to use emotions of the public to keep them both distracted as well as divided with each other over issues - including what are the symbols of the 'society'. Its a technique perfected under Modi vis-a-vis Gandhi, Nehru, Bose, Ambedkar, etc
24/4
What distinguishes Image Management from the recognition of history (as should be done by all political leaders of caliber and cognizant of their historical place) is the appropriation and alteration of these icons.
24/5
Appropriation means that the icon and symbol is detached from its historical meaning as well as the central goal/purpose/vision that the person or symbol originally had.
24/6
Alteration means to completely separate the actual person and re-brand (to use the consumer-corporate terminology as it fits) to suit the needs of continuing the propaganda.
24/7
In the present case, none from AAP is capable of reciting a single lines from 22 vows of Ambedkar or Annihilation of Caste (much less Riddles of Hinduism) and perhaps, till date has not made a single reference to Ambedkar's speech in Constituent Assembly.
24/8
Similarly, not one speech relied on Jail Notebooks or Achut da sawal or Why I am Atheist or any other writings of Bhagat Singh, much less, drew ideas from it directly to "apply in a concrete case".
24/9
Therefore, the invocation of Bhagat Singh and Ambedkar is neither for 'application purposes' (that is to take their ideas and apply in real world) or for meaning purpose (to use for formulating broad strategic direction).
24/10
What these use of symbols and icons is Image Management. To use them as icons to show the public what "their" political campaign is about while at the same time vanishing the voice, writing and ideas of both the persons.
24/11
In this manner, every icon that is made part of Image Management becomes a tool for continuing the propaganda to show "how their politics of today ought to be branded" as opposed to "how their decision-making or State policy is application of their ideas".
24/12
The benefit for Image manager is that it provides further fuel for continuing propaganda and strengthening the loyalty of their voters.
24/13
The loss to the society is immense as the historical persons become merely icons and symbols and moreover are overtly monopolized by one political party.
Further by separating them from their historical meaning and their own ideas, they are reduced to mere pictures
24/14
Since all Image Management is to maintain their "own flock", the consequence to the society as a whole is unnecessary divisions and gradual loss of historical purpose and meaning.
AAP use reflects further a close study and imitation of tactics of BJP and Modi.
24/15
Modi and BJP have been at core of this iconoclasm where history is as relentlessly attacked as is the data of the today and false binaries (Nehru v. Patel) (Gandhi v. Bose) etc are created to both divide the society and cause loss of sense of history to society as a whole.
There has been flurry of writings, tweets and interviews that have speculated on the possible future of @INCIndia - ranging from 'continuing ahead as usual' to 'hope' to explanation in terms of radicalization in Hindus 1/n
There is a sense of anger and grief. Exemplified here by @Schandillia at the large section of population that has endorsed #BJP whose policies hurt these voters more. 2/n
Then the brilliant incisive analysis looking at the patterns of Hindi voter, something I myself mostly agree with by @ShivamShankarS , the author of very engaging Art of Conjuring Alternate Realities. 3/n
has become the organizing shared premise for the society at large.
Of course, it wasnt unidirectional but it is the pattern that dominates these societies. 2/n
It is exhibited in the conformity-identity where imaginations of ideal pre-modernity of Hindu faith are employed as a sense of self - who am I and who are my people. 3/n
