As a mechanic attaches the steering wheel to the steering column, Alonso ensures that the quick-release mechanism is locked and the wheel fixed in place. He then pulls and releases the clutch twice in order to verify that the paddle is working as intended.

Clutch release practice
A common exercise on the pre-grid, practicing the motion of releasing the clutch serves to build/retain muscle memory in getting to the clutch bite point as soon as possible, a big part of getting off the line well.

Featuring more than 300.000 upshifts recorded across the 22 Grands Prix of 2021, this dataset, while being an indirect metric, can point to how hard the teams have been pushing their power units (more specifically the ICE), throughout the season.

Running the engine at higher RPM will generate more internal friction, yielding more heat that has to be dealt with by teams and their cooling solutions. In addition, running at higher RPM will inevitably result in a more wear, shortening the lifespan of the engine.

Analysis of Launch RPM for Drivers and Teams in the 2021 Formula 1 World Championship

The dataset consists of 345 starts from the 2021 season, recording the engine RPM prior to launching off the line.

From this data, we get an impression of the strategies employed by the teams in the hopes of optimizing the performance of their car once the lights go out.

The horizontal bars indicate median per driver/team, while the circles are recorded values for each of the 22 Grand Prix. The leftmost column shows the engine manufacturer.
