3/16/21--6 Asian women were gunned down in Atlanta. We were devastated. We grieved. Then we fought back fast & furious...That fight was grounded in 50 years of Asian American movement building.
A thread 1/14
3/17/21 @AdvancingJusticeATL organized a massive community call & directed donations to victim’s families. All #AsianAmericanAdvancingJustice offices around the US have been mobilizing for justice since the formation of the @AsianLawCaucus 1972 and @AALDEF 1974. 2/14
The Georgia Asian Am community was on the ground and provided invaluable leadership to the national response. Advocacy orgs, churches, business orgs, student orgs, community groups. In the 2020 election year Asian Americans had already helped flip the state. 3/14
From 2020 #StopAAPIHate moved the fight against anti-Asian violence onto the national stage. It was launched by SFSU Asian Am Studies and Chinese for Affirmative Action, born in 1969 the early years of the #AsianAmericanMovement. Co-founder AAPI Equity established in 1976. 4/14
#AsianAmericanStudies, born in the late 1960s, trained the scholars who pushed back on the Cherokee Cty sheriff’s “bad day/sex addiction” narrative with the racist history of Asian women's hypersexuality and expendability. #EthnicStudiesNow 5/14
Scholars and feminist activists who've researched and written about the the racist history of cultural images of Asian women schooled us about the 1875 Page Act and misogyny of 20th century wars in Asia. Read @Reappropriate’s threads from March 2021. 6/14
Asian Am feminists who’ve organized with massage parlor and sex workers and against gendered violence for YEARS, @RedCanarySong @NAPAWF @aafcollective and so many more, provided context, supported survivors, cautioned us that over-policing doesn't necessarily make us safe. 7/14
Journalists took the fight to their newsrooms demanding nuanced, complex coverage. They conducted bilingual interviews. They knew who to talk to because they’ve been reporting on our communities FOR YEARS, and advocating with @aaja born in 1981. 8/14
Asian Ams in philanthropy have been calling for more resources & community-centered funding, educating donors about the Model Minority myth and the need to disaggregate data. By this time @AAPIP was already over 30 years old. 9/14
Asian Am creatives mobilized—from veterans who’ve made art since the dawn of the Asian Am Movement in the 1960s to recently arrived immigrant and refugee artists. We mined the archives for classic images of Asian Am resistance like @CorkyLee's photos dating back to the 70s. 10/14
Proud that @PBS, @WETA and @ITVS rebroadcast #AsianAmericansPBS, the docuseries i produced with filmmakers Jean Tsien @SLeoChiang @GeetaGandbhir @anothergracelee Don Young and @CAAM founded in the late 70s by legendary #LoniDing 11/14
The fight went out on new platforms @18MillionRising @Reappropriate @AngryAsianMan @NBCNewsAsianAmerica @AsAmNews @Hyphen @RiseNowUS, @SheThePeople, @TheyCallUsBruce @DearAsianAmerica #AsianAmerica @SouthernFriedAsian @AsianAmericana podcasts, blogs & more!🔥🔥🔥 12/14
40 years ago Asian Ams mobilized for justice for #VincentChin. In 2021 new leadership, energy, fight was breathtaking. S. Asian, SE Asian, undocumented, communities in alliance w/ veterans of the movement in solidarity with communities of color. #May19Project @HelenZiaReal 13/14
That leadership and solidarity wasn’t new. It's been building, flourishing, staking the claim of justice for years. For decades. Don’t let anyone tell you that the #AsianAmericanMovement is a thing of the past. We’re still here. We are a family that lives on and fights on. 14/14
