What do all of these thumbnails have in common?

They're all designed by @venturepsd

I got to ask him 4 questions about making better thumbnails.

And he didn't disappoint... (thread)
How did you learn how to design thumbnails?

I’m entirely self-taught.

Specific thumbnail tutorials on Youtube are pretty rare.

In the end, I learned by doing.

I've been fascinated by design since I was 13.

I made 1000s of rubbish designs before they started to look good.
What design tips would you give to creators?

LAYOUT:
🔲 Work out a good layout before you start
🔲 Think about your target audience and why they would click

ASSETS:
🔲 Take photos that are as interesting/exaggerated as possible
🔲 Spending time taking unique photos pays off
What design tips would you give to creators? (cont.)

CAMERA RAW:
🔲 Use the Camera Raw tool to improve your colour correction
🔲 Camera Raw: Images that contain minimally processed data

COLORS:
🔲 Use a color circle
🔲 Complementary colours contrast & get the viewers' attention
What's your creative process when making a thumbnail?

When the concept/assets are finalized, I start with the layout.

Adjusting the sizing and positioning until I’m happy.

Most important element should be the 1st thing the viewer notices

After that, I'm photomanipulating where needed...

And colour correcting the images.

Finally, I always mockup the thumbnail to review

I use thumbsup.tv
What general advice would you give to creators about thumbnails?

I'm sure you've heard it before...

The thumbnail is just as important as the video.

People scroll fast, keep your thumbnails simple and eyecatching

And once you have their attention, give them a reason to click.
+ Some bonus advice for creators:

If you aren't making the thumbnails yourself, a good relationship between the creator and thumbnail artist is crucial.

It can take your designer's creativity, productivity and motivation to the next level, which will mean better thumbnails.
Summary:

🔲 Practise makes perfect
🔲 Focus on the layout, using unique images, colour grading
🔲 Prioritise your elements
🔲 Mockup your thumbnails

Thanks to @venturepsd for the time.

There's been some incredible YouTube videos this year.

Like, really incredible videos.

But which one was the best?

Here's my top 14 YouTube videos of 2022:
Note:

This is 'MY' top videos of 2022, not 'THE' top videos of 2022.

Videos that are truly remarkable, to me.

They are affected by my interests, connection with creators, blah, blah, blah.

Enjoy the list...
14/ WE MOVED BACK TO NEW YORK CITY

So, there’s definitely some nostalgia here.

Casey's return to New York took me back to one of the best periods on YouTube.

But it's also a really great video.

Sense of self, admitting wrongs, belonging.

Would you subscribe to a weekly newsletter (by me) that helps creators (you) make better content?

...with a sprinkling of average humour.

I will abide by the results of this poll.
Be honest.

If you hate newsletters and don't subscribe to them, vote no.

I won't cry that much...
It's close but...

Storytelling is a superpower.

But it's damn difficult.

Here's 8 principles that will make sure you never tell a bad story again:
SETUP:

Every good story starts with a good setup.

It introduces the ‘world’ and creates a promise with the audience that shows them it’s worth their time.

Giving the context to make them care.

Crucial to establish two key things:
• The goal
• The stakes

Let me explain...
GOAL:

What is the character trying to achieve?

(character = subject, story etc)

The goal must mean something to the character, giving it a 'why'.

Establishing this gives the story direction.

Everything that happens after this point must move the story closer to this goal.

AI is going to change YouTube forever.

Keep up or get left behind.

Here’s how:
As always, these are my thoughts as someone involved in the space.

And while I’ve been spending time looking into AI and testing several different tools...

I’m far from an expert (very far).

I’m just some guy on the internet sharing his opinion.

Enjoy 🦾
To start, let's look at where we’re at...

AI tools have started to pop up everywhere

And they are awesome (really awesome).

DALL-E, ChatGPT etc

But with big advancements comes hype.

And there’s loads of that.

It’s still early days...

If you’re a YouTuber whose thumbnails are holding you back...

Here’s 4-steps that’ll make you a thumbnail-genius:
But before we get into the juicy stuff...

These steps are focused on helping you think of better thumbnail concepts.

That’s what is really going to make the difference. Trust me.

If you’re looking for design tips, this isn’t for you.

Right, let’s go…
1/ Audience

Firstly, you need to do is identify who your video is for.

Every decision should centre around them.

You need to understand who they are (demographics).

But more importantly, their desires, needs and wants (psychographics).

They're the ones that click.
