Stopped by this event today. There were about 50 cars and 5 trucks. Not quite a convoy capable of bringing gridlock to Salem. Attendance was around 80 or 100 I’d say.
This is Marc Thielman, GOP anti-mask candidate for Governor. I like how he segued from “Oregon is a great and diverse state” to “we are in a war between good and evil” in a matter of seconds.
He resigned his role as school superintendent to run for Governor "a week after three formal complaints were filed against him, alleging a hostile work environment, illegal firing practices and disregard for any viewpoint that is not his own." opb.org/article/2022/0…
The stage he spoke on flew an Ashli Babbitt flag and was guarded by about a dozen people in Proud Boy regalia.
You’ll also notice that the stage sports a sign for Dan Tooze, a Proud Boy who is running for local office.
Tooze made news (if you'll pardon the rhyme) last year when the Portland area GOP contracted with his Proud Boy affiliated security company to patrol the area around a party meeting. wweek.com/news/city/2021…
It was a pretty nice day for this time of year, 55 degrees and no rain. Not sure how to explain the relatively sparse turnout. It could be that with the state mask mandates being lifted last week, it took some of the urgency out of this anti-mandate event.
This was the line of cars that showed up for the convoy.
One of the more notable features of the recent Oregon GOP/conservative events I've observed over the past few months is the prominent role of Proud Boys, who seem to have become the de facto "security" force as well as a good chunk of the audience for these events.
There was a guy in Proud Boy regalia serving food at the event's refreshment stand about 50 feet away from the stage. Thielman was warmly greeted by some Proud Boys as he left the stage. There is absolutely no effort to even pretend to keep that group at arm's length.
This event had a similar feel to this event a few weeks ago in the same spot.
Oregon’s state Capitol is scheduled to be visited by one of those traffic snarling convoys tomorrow (even though our mask mandate was lifted last week). I work across the street from the Capitol, so I guess I’ll know soon enough if this actually happens.
A group had set up a prayer vigil on the site as a precursor to the convoy. I walked by today and saw a total of three people in the tent, two of whom were performing music for an audience of one.
Don’t think 33 attendees would make make much of an impact, but perhaps FB is not indicative of the energy level we’ll see tomorrow.
Interesting that KGW is issuing press reports for the largely invisible, moderate Republicans of Oregon (only one of whom is named). I have seen zero evidence to substantiate the highlighted claims.
From what I know of those 17 gubernatorial candidates, a good number more closely resemble this guy than anyone who stands a chance of winning votes from Democrats.
This is the big annual conference for Oregon Republicans. One of the people generally thought of as “moderate” by other Republicans is speaking at it. This is the picture they chose to promote it.
The first six hits that show up when one googles "Nick Fuentes." We're supposed to believe that the Lt. Gov. does not have anyone on her staff who takes 5 seconds to google the people who invite her to speak. Uh huh.
Kudos to this reporter for catching this far right politician lying, and lying badly. For more on this noxious public figure, check out this episode of this great podcast. boisestatepublicradio.org/podcast/extrem…
This video made the rounds LAST JUNE. Anyone who follows or is involved with politics on the right, even a little bit, would totally know who this guy is.
Just finished listening to this entire podcast series and I highly recommend it. npr.org/podcasts/10642…
A couple takeaways. 1) Right wing extremists are almost always liars. The host is too polite/restrained to just say that, but we encounter multiple examples of "leaders" just shamelessly lying about their actions/beliefs in order to try to mainstream themselves.
2) I appreciate that the host identifies the "authoritarian" danger of this extremism. These folks pose a threat to the US because they hate and are working to disrupt most aspects of modern, pluralistic, constitutional, majoritarian democracy.
This stuff is of course, nutso. But believe me when I tell you that in my recent archive visits I’ve seen scores of anti-UN and NWO pamphlets from the 1970s and 80s that read much like this. I saw them in the papers of Walter Huss, the chair of the OR GOP in 1978.
