Along with the usual suspense over who will take home the gold at Sunday night’s Oscars, those planning to attend the ceremony are contending with another uncertainty this year: Will they catch COVID-19?

latimes.com/entertainment-…
The recent BAFTAs, held in London on March 13 along with various parties before and after, are now suspected of having led to a number of COVID-19 infections, including among some of this year’s Oscar nominees. latimes.com/entertainment-…
Following the BAFTAs, “Belfast” filmmaker Kenneth Branagh tested positive for COVID-19, as did the film’s Ciarán Hinds, a supporting actor nominee. Forced to isolate, both bowed out of attending Saturday’s Producers Guild Awards. latimes.com/entertainment-…
It is not clear whether the Oscars pose a similar risk. While the UK is currently experiencing a spike in new COVID-19 cases, numbers in the U.S. — and in Los Angeles in particular — have been declining sharply. latimes.com/entertainment-…
Presenters and performers at the Oscars will not be required to be vaccinated but will have to show that they have recently tested negative for the virus. latimes.com/entertainment-…
If there’s any concern about attending these events in the wake of a possible surge, it hasn’t been much in evidence judging from the crowded ballrooms at the various guild awards and after-parties that have taken place this month. latimes.com/entertainment-…

The last time (and maybe the first time) most Americans heard of Volodymyr Zelensky, the Ukrainian president was at the center of a scandal that would lead to the impeachment of then-President Trump.

latimes.com/world-nation/s… Image
Trump in 2019 threatened to hold up weapons deliveries to Ukraine — caught even then in a simmering war with Russian proxies — unless Zelensky helped him dig up political dirt on rival Joe Biden.

latimes.com/world-nation/s…
Today, the shadow of that scandal lingers. How much did Trump’s toying with Ukraine, cozying up to Russian President Vladimir Putin and Trump’s acquittal on charges of abuse of power & obstruction of Congress influence Putin’s decision to invade Ukraine?

Senate Republicans repeatedly name-checked “Demand Justice," signaling that part of Tuesday’s & Wednesday’s strategy will be to press Jackson into explaining why a progressive advocacy group that supports Supreme Court expansion also backs her nomination.

Jackson swats back GOP claims she’s been soft on child pornographers.

“Nothing could be further from the truth,” she said, adding that she made sure “the children’s voices” are heard in these sentencing hearings.

Grocery workers across Southern California began voting today to authorize a strike against Ralphs, Albertsons, Vons and Pavilions in an effort to pressure the companies to raise wages. latimes.com/business/story…
Talks between the union’s seven locals and the companies stalled two weeks ago.

A strike authorization vote does not necessarily result in a strike. It gives union leaders the right to call a strike if an agreement cannot be reached. latimes.com/business/story…

Scientists say there’s an urgent need to phase out fossil fuels. So how will Southern California solve its natural gas problem?

SoCalGas says it has at least a partial answer: hydrogen.

@Sammy_Roth reports: latimes.com/business/story…
SoCalGas proposed to build “the nation’s largest green hydrogen energy infrastructure system.”

It could include hundreds of miles of pipelines to bring the clean-burning fuel to power plants, factories and the ports of L.A. and Long Beach. latimes.com/business/story…
Is hydrogen a crucial clean energy solution, or or gas industry greenwashing?

It’s a question driving fierce debate among environmentalists, elected officials and labor unions — in Southern California and around the world. latimes.com/business/story…
