Content warning: Hate Crime in Cumbria. Islamophobia

Yesterday we were contacted by local news outlet Cumbria Live about this upsetting story.

A family have refused to move into a home after bacon was found wrapped round the door handles

After finding a new home, the family went to have a final viewing ready to make the move only to discover bacon had been wrapped round both the front and back door.

It was discovered last week at the home in Whitehaven

The family now do not want to move to the area.

Furious at the situation, one woman spoke to CumbriaLive about the discovery saying:

"The family were wanting to move in and found the bacon on the doors. They're not a Muslim family but I think people have seen that they have a different colour skin and done this...

…I know it's not everyone, but imagine being that bothered about a different family moving in. It's a hate crime, It's racism and people shouldn't judge people by the colour of their skin…

…The problem is it's worked and the family didn't feel safe so have not moved in. They just don't want to live somewhere like that."

This hateful act has spoken with a clear loud voice - we need to come together and be louder.

Yet time and again we read comments about us on social media, that our organisation is not needed, that by talking about racism we make things worse. We disagree. Because ignoring racism doesn't make it go away, simply being a passive bystander allows acts like this to continue.

Our county needs to be bold, our county needs to embrace anti-racism so that together we can drown out these racist voices who try to give Cumbria a bad name.

Even simple actions like putting up an Anti Racist Cumbria supporters sticker in shops and homes can begin to send a strong message in our towns and villages. They're free (bar postage) by the way*.

Stand up and be counted #Cumbria. Let's make Cumbria the UK's first anti-racist county in the UK - let us proudly say together that racism is not welcome here.
