Yesterday our team went door-to-door at RiverChase Apartments, where we are negotiating a #CommunityBenefitsAgreement.
The feelings we heard: confusion. Frustration. Resignation.
These residents are being pushed from their homes, and many feel unheard.🧵
Of the folks who are left at RiverChase, many have never spoken to a Housing Navigator (person designated to help find a new home).
Some who had reported that their Navigators weren’t helpful or not communicative.
Others had good experiences but still just can’t find a place.
One resident is being forced to move to Clarksville to find housing that meets her family’s needs. She works here in Nashville. She’ll have to commute.
She also reported that she hadn’t even heard of the $2200 moving stipend that was promised to residents.
Many residents at RiverChase have Section 8 vouchers. That limits the amount of places that will take them.
Some residents have criminal records. We heard from residents that landlords around town are denying anyone with any record.
Others have language barriers. We spoke to a few parents through their young children as translators.
They are parents, they are workers, they are contributing members of our community.
And they’re being pushed out from their homes.
We need a strong CBA not only to protect them, but to provide pathways out of poverty for others across Nashville.
And if we do this right, this CBA can do more than just help these folks, & build jobs at one site.
We could set a new model for #equitabledevelopment in this city, so we can hear fewer stories of displacement, & more of people building livelihoods for themselves.
