Firstly, kudos to Forest for the transparent announcement on this and great to see the club nudging forward with improved transparency (beating Companies House notification!). It can only be positive to have more footballing experience on the Board than previously to boot.

Still, there’s more progress on governance: fan representation (one can dream in line with the fan-led review!) as well as from non-football operations (seen at many other organisations) would be where I would start. Perhaps there are more changes coming 👀

So the man himself. Fans may have reacted to this announcement with “who?”. Here’s what’s available (SPOILER ALERT, it’s all Olympiakos before Forest where he started off as an IT Manager):

We know some elements of his DoF responsibilities (more on how this fits in later). Jury is out on his impact over the past three-and-a-half years (hot on the heels of Dowling’s departure)…

Ironically, the club’s announcement of his arrival (06/12/2018) had the club in the playoff places (5th) under Karanka. Most fans actually know Dourekas as “the man in the dugout” and we never returned to the top six at any point that season…

It appears that he is very close with the owners give the nepotistic hires which included his son… Is this a move for more “control” over the running of the club?

Questions:
What will he be responsible for moving forwards?
How does this relate to other roles at the club?
Is he responsible for hiring/firing managers?
What are the roles of all the other Board members?
How does this move impact Murphy/Cooper’s influence on football matters?

It’s difficult to keep track of the long list of names involved in footballing matters (Murphy, Syrianos, Brass, Scott, Brazil, Henderson, Cooper, Modesto, Ducruet - streets will never forget Anigo) with rumours of a new sporting director incoming too…

What is the need for a Sporting Director when we have a CEO, Director of Football, Head of Data and Analytic Recruitment, Head of Academy Recruitment, Head of Scouting, Director of Football Development…? Maybe this money is better use on improving catering or ticket office staff

How do all they all work together both for recruitment, playing philosophy, football operations, academy/first-team matters? Especially when you consider the fanfare surrounding Gary Brazil’s new role. Has he ever been empowered on this deserved role?!

On non-footballing matters, when do we plan to replace David Cook and how will we maintain the strong commercial gains of recent years to fund all of this investment? Not forgetting the new stand…

Beyond internal matters, transparency on our relationship with NF Football Investments (our holding company) would be welcome. As flagged earlier this week, Ioannis Vrentzos is now the sole Director of this entity…

Moreover, what is role of the “Forest Chief”? After his alleged involvement in transfer activity beyond his customary post-match tweets, his name curiously is missing from the Who’s Who page. He’s seen more regularly than some of our Board members…

In summary, many questions on the running of our club still remain and it’s important that as fans, despite success on the pitch, off the pitch matters receive the same critique as our match performances to ensure longer term success.

A cynic may say this is a Greek PR move looking to take credit for this season as the sun starts to shine… How much freedom do Murphy and Cooper really have? Will they be allowed to continue their great start without needless interference? #NFFC
