DESIGNING GARMENTS WITH CIRCLES

Circles are used to design different garments such a circle skirt Image
A circle sleeve Image
Peplum tops Image
A circle dress and lots more Image
In making a circle or flare you will need the following measurements

1. Circumference of the circle
2. Circle length
3. Radius of the circle
Circumference of the circle is determined by taking your measurement around the part of the body where you want to measure, for example if you want to measure a waist circumference you will place your measuring tape around the waist like so Image
Another example is, If you want to measure your sleeve circumference, your measuring tape will be around the sleeve like so. Image
The radius of a circle is determined using the formula
radius = circumference ÷ 6.28

So if the circumference of the circle is 28"
radius = 28÷6.28 = 4.4

therefore the radius of a 28" waist circumference is 4.4" Image
In designing different types of circles, you must know how to cut a 360 degree circle. Image
What is a 360degree circle?
360 degree circle in simple terms is a full circle Image
This is a 360 degree circle skirt Image
Once you can make a 360degree circle you are ready to learn other types of circles which are simply multiples of a 360 degree circle.
180 degree circle - ½ a circle
720 degree circle = 360 × 2
1080 degree circle = 360 × 3
1440 degree circle = 360 × 4
If we apply the same logic used in arriving at different types of circles mentioned, then we can use the same logic to have others like
360 × 5
360 × 6
360 × 7
And so on

Circle A could either be a 180 degree or a 360 degree circle
The truth of the matter is a lot of times, you may not be able to differentiate the difference between a 180degree circle and a 360degree circle just by looking at them unless they are worn side by side
The truth of the matter is a lot of times, you may not be able to differentiate the difference between a 180 degree circle and a 360 degree circle just by looking at them unless they are worn side by side
This is because a 180degree circle can be cut in a way that makes it look similar in fullness to a 360 degree circle and also for a lot of factors like, the fabric, how it was cut, the grain line and the length.
For example this skirt can easily be mistaken for a full circle but the designer said it's a half circle 👇 Image
And this one here is a full circle also according to the designer. If you didn't see both images to compare you may not be able to spot the difference in fullness👇 Image
This is circle B, look at it closely, you'll notice that the fulness does not start from the waist else we would have called it a pleat or gathers, the fulness started somewhere below the waist and this is known as a flounce. Image
These folds seen in this circle are known as a flounce, the number of circles joined together will determine the intensity of the flounce. Image
I understand that these are what we normally refer to as flounce ImageImageImage
You may not realise, but the most common use of flounces is in fact all types of circle skirts.
A half circle skirt (180 degree) is an example of subtle flounces Image
On the other hand, a double skirt (720 degree) is an illustration of more prominent flounces Image
A flounce is the additional fullness in a circle.
The more the number of circles you have in a skirt or sleeve as the case may be, the fuller it will be Image
This is a 1080 degree circle
You cannot achieve this without sewing more than one circle, hence the need for different types of circles mentioned in this thread such as 720, 1080, 1440 degree circles and so on Image
Would you like to see the difference between different types of circles by making them yourself?
I know you want to, you can achieve that by getting my ebook titled Mastering Circle Skirts👇 Image
See images below for examples of circles you will learn from the book

WHY DO WE NEED BLOCKS?
The essence of drafting Blocks is so they can be reused over and over again for the same person.
Once you have tested your blocks and you are satisfied with the fit.
The next thing is to keep it safe and reuse every time you have a new project.

THE ANATOMY OF A DART

A dart is a fold of fabric sewn to take in extra fabric in order to tailor a garment to the individual figure.
We'll be looking at the components of a dart.
