Chance to stop and reflect on my learning from yesterdays @physiosinsport conference - my first thread (I think!)
1. Looking ahead to volunteering as a physio at the #B2022 games and the opportunities to learn from a range of clinicians in a multi sport event, in a sport that provides the chance to work with para-athletes again is exciting and a small step towards the dream goal #Paralympics
2. And how hands-on Ax and MOI shouldn’t become a lost art in Sport. Develop/practice hands-on Ax skills, know your anatomy, think logically and treat what you see. Imaging is a lovely luxury to aid Ax and 🔺but shouldn’t take the place of what makes us autonomous practitioners
3. 💭 why I wanted to do rotations before working in sport from @cs_bolling - people are complex, so are their injuries, keeping the BPS model at the heart of my approach to athletes is key to successful outcomes #whenisasprainnotasprain (also reminded that I like wine…and CSI)
4. @philglasgow showing how #POLICE and #PEACE & #LOVE open up the opportunity to start early rehab in acute injury - pain management and early mobilisation key, reinforced by @alastair_little giving real case-studies to support this and helping make the links to practice in 🏉
5. @FrejaPetrie presenting her teams’ research on concussion/neck strength in Women’s rugby was fascinating, but also showed the gaps in provision for Women’s and Mens sports - having worked in both, I’m painfully aware how hard it can be to keep female players safe, even elite
6. @Theo_Farley confirming my interest in concussion Ax and considerations re safe RTP, especially MSK injuries post concussion & Talking w/ @sianknott and @owphysio about M-study has started joining the dots re research interests - perhaps @CardiffUPhysio will have me back? 🤞
7. Sleep (@Lukegup86) and Nutrition(@SamImpey_) as recovery aids, again thinking about the whole person as a complex entity, maximising all aspects of an athletes rehab by thinking about more than just the role of exercise in recovery.
8. Gaining some perspective on salvageable injury from @CarolinePhysio - potential for turnaround in a time- pressured environment.
9. And being made to comfortably uncomfortable with @MelroseStewart1 - could listen to her talk all day. Noticing unconscious bias/systemic and institutional racism and challenging it. Contribute to solutions, vocalising against inequalities, demanding proof of change not words.
10. Lessons we can take into all avenues, empty words and promises without evidence and outcomes destroy trust, undermine relationships and, as a physio, hinder effective rehabilitation. Thank you @MelroseStewart1 🙌
11. In summary - I am so proud of the decision I made to change career, grateful of the opportunities I have been afforded/worked to achieve, fortunate to have stepped onto the ladder towards a career I aspire to - I have many rungs to climb, but F2F opportunities like this have
12. given me the next kick to push on and work for it - one rung at a time! Thank you @physiosinsport for an outstanding conference and to the speakers for sharing their time and expertise. 🙏
