I learned a lot about Ron DeSantis I didn't know before, and I think readers will, too. Let me share a few of the key themes in this piece: nymag.com/intelligencer/…
1. I think the DeSantis project needs to be understood as an attempt to restore the party's control over the nominating process after Trump broke it in 2016, a la "The Party Decides." nymag.com/intelligencer/…
2. DeSantis is consolidating all the changes to the party's base that occurred under Trump, including overtly wooing extremist factions and actors that were outside the party tent pre-Trump nymag.com/intelligencer/…
3. DeSantis has never accepted the results of the 2020 election as legitimate nymag.com/intelligencer/…
4. People assume he's just pandering to the right, but DeSantis laid out his philosophical disagreement with democracy in a book written over 10 years ago that nobody seems to have paid any attention to nymag.com/intelligencer/…
5. If you don't closely follow conservative media, the breadth and extent of pro-DeSantis propaganda might come as a shock to you. Almost every niche on the right is pitching DeSantis as their champion. nymag.com/intelligencer/…
6. DeSantis has also had some successful efforts to woo the center, most notably by keeping schools open 2020-21, and Democrats underestimate his skill at their peril. nymag.com/intelligencer/…
There's a lot more in the piece. I think DeSantis is a crucial figure to understand the future of the GOP and I try to decode it all. nymag.com/intelligencer/…

I would like to read some reporting on how Putin sees this working out long term. Occupation/annexation? Install a puppet regime and support its secret police, media, etc?
If Putin delusionally believed Ukraine’s government had no support, and would fold or even welcome Russian troops, how does he plan to control it having learned that’s not true?
A couple good pieces of informed speculation on how Putin might proceed: 1) He might try to use siege tactics to leverage Ukraine into a negotiated settlement samf.substack.com/p/russias-plan…

To be clear, my item did not say she used that phrase. It described her belief that the Rothschild family secretly set forest fires through a space laser in order to clear land for a rail project from which it would profit.
Her explanation is that she didn't realize the Rothschilds were Jewish. So, he putative claim was a secret space laser conspiracy controlled by Gentiles nymag.com/intelligencer/…
I've never seen MTG explain why she alleged “an unholy alliance of leftists, capitalists, and Zionist supremacists has schemed to promote immigration and miscegenation, with the deliberate aim of breeding us out of existence in our own homelands.” nymag.com/intelligencer/…

I have genuinely come to believe the DeSantis stans do attacking my pieces without reading them. They are *filled* with examples on his extremism on vaccines.
It's true that if you read NR and other right-wing sites, you will never encounter news that DeSantis holds events with anti-vaxxers, appointed one as his top health officer, etc.
Therefore anybody making arguments that proceed from these facts will seem self-evidently crazy/biased to them and their followers. It's such a pure case of epistemic closure.

The right's favorite January 6 defense was that nobody had been charged with sedition (yet). It didn't age well! nymag.com/intelligencer/…
Oh man, I should have known Greenwald would be one of the people spouting the "no sedition prosecutions" line washingtonpost.com/politics/2022/… Image
Watching the video of conservatives emphasizing the importance of the fact that nobody had (yet) been charged with sedition really adds to the effect

If you haven't already, please read this important thread illustrating the ongoing mistreatment of many college athletes. I want to add a few points of my own--
Since last summer, the NCAA has been under a new regime in which college athletes who have market value can get paid, sometimes huge sums. OSU signed one recruit for a $1.4 million contract for "autographs" espn.com/college-footba…
If your only problem with college sports was that the free market was being interfered with, then you should be satisfied. But if your problem was the treatment of college athletes, then I'd argue the situation is hardly better now, as Williamson's thread indicates.

The only possible explanation for a Democrat going to Florida in December is … what? I’ve lost the plot
So the DeSantis argument is that anytime somebody goes to Florida in the Winter it vindicates DeSantis's policy of "freedom" (to go unvaccinated anywhere, including cruise ships)? This is too dumb for words
I mean, is there anybody who who will actually believe that the only reason to visit Florida in winter is the policies of Ron DeSantis?
