"Turning Red" is important for everyone, period, @letsnixit founder Rachael Newton writes #InTheirOwnVoices.

How the Pixar film helps destigmatize menstruation, so we can all embrace our "red panda."
thestar.com/opinion/contri…
Growing up in Asia, Newton connected deeply with the film and the long-standing values of her family. But also "there’s one amazing point that must be mentioned: the openness when talking about our “red panda” and the film’s destigmatization of periods."

"Woven into this, a connection to her mother, her grandmother, and her ancestors. They have all experienced the red panda," she writes. "We saw Mei struggle with controlling it, with understanding it, and ultimately, becoming at peace with it."

"Despite the generational stigma surrounding red pandas, Mei is the change I hope to see.

When we normalize something that could be embarrassing and weird, when we share our experiences with others, they can show us that we really are not that different." thestar.com/opinion/contri…
As the founder of period care company @letsnixit, Newton says she's encouraged by the film. "Let’s embrace our inner pandas, because as Mei shows in the film, it’s really not that weird or embarrassing after all."

🧵Roars are sure to begin the minute Kyle Lowry walks out of the tunnel at the Scotiabank Arena on Sunday. There is a bond between Lowry and Toronto is undeniable and unbreakable, the former Raptor reflects on it in an exclusive interview with the Star.

Sunday, when Lowry appears as a member of the Miami Heat, will be the first time he has appeared in the arena since Feb. 28, 2020.

Lowry wants to one thing make crystal clear. It’s as much about him giving love that is about him receiving it.

“I think I appreciate them more than they appreciate me because I wouldn’t have been able to do half the stuff I did without them.” Lowry said

Recreational property prices across Ontario are soaring and demand for cottage country houses continues to outstrip supply, despite interest rate increases and a return to pre-pandemic travel.

thestar.com/news/gta/2022/…
The average price of a single-family home in Ontario’s recreational regions skyrocketed by 34.6 per cent in 2021, the highest year-over-year increase in Canada, according to a new report by Royal LePage released Thursday.

thestar.com/news/gta/2022/…
“It’s not unusual for recreational properties to appreciate faster than their urban counterparts, but the sheer size of the leap forward, particularly in Ontario, is remarkable,” said Phil Soper, who has been CEO of Royal LePage for 20 years. thestar.com/news/gta/2022/… Image

Before fleeing war-torn Ukraine to Canada to meet her daughter, she had a medical procedure. Then, lab told her they found cancer and that she needed chemotherapy as soon as possible. She returned to Ukraine so her treatment wouldn’t be a financial burden.

“She just escaped from the war and my nine-year-old son asked why grandmother had to go back to where people are dying. I couldn’t explain it,” said Anastasia Nakliutska.

“She didn’t have OHIP and we don’t have the money to cover her medical expenses." thestar.com/news/canada/20…
While Canada has opened the door to displaced Ukrainians for temporary refuge in the country, they don’t have automatic access to public health care unless they arrive as permanent residents.

Ontario's sixth wave is here. And so are antiviral oral medication that can help keep high-risk individuals out of the hospital. But doctors warn Paxlovid is not reaching the right people in time. thestar.com/news/gta/2022/…
To date, only about 400 courses of Paxlovid have been given out from a total 40,000 received by Ontario from the federal government, according to Ministry of Health numbers provided to the Star.
thestar.com/news/gta/2022/…
A further 755 courses have been delivered to the province’s hospitals, but it’s not clear whether all the doses have been prescribed to in-patients.

With Ontario seeing an estimated 30,000 to 35,000 new daily infections — roughly double the number of daily cases on March 1 when the province dropped vaccine passports — it’s clear Ontario has entered its sixth wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, experts say. thestar.com/news/gta/2022/…
The numbers are according to the latest wastewater signal estimates from the COVID-19 Science Advisory Table, which also reports that most public health units are once again experiencing exponential growth of infections. thestar.com/news/gta/2022/…
“Many people are behaving as if the pandemic is almost over. And this means that it is mainly our own behaviour that is driving this wave,” said Dr. Peter Jüni, epidemiologist and scientific director of the science table. thestar.com/news/gta/2022/…

The Ontario government has laid out its four-year plan to fix the province’s housing crisis.

From changing municipal processes to allowing 12-storey timber buildings, here’s how the province’s aims to address the housing crisis. torstar.co/eERj50Iwqg3
Efficiencies to the municipal planning process and taking some of the politics out of planning by delegating site plan review decisions to municipal staff rather than local councils, effective July 1 is mentioned. thestar.com/news/gta/2022/…
Site plan control reviews would be extended from 30 days to 60 days but, effective Jan. 1, 2023, municipalities will have to begin refunding planning application fees if decisions don’t occur within legislated timelines. thestar.com/news/gta/2022/… Image
