The Smith family has quietly been amassing one of the most lethal fandoms in existence
In the last 24 hours they’ve dragged out Hailey Bieber’s n-word posts, Jim Carrey enabling his ex’s fatal addiction, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s son stabbing a 60 year old man in the head, and more
I didn’t know about any of this. The sheer seismic force of their “This You” posts could sink a small island
I dunno, maybe an industry fueled by abusive narcissists, hard drugs, and pedophilia should probably avoid publicly claiming the moral high ground on anyone!

Look, I know Lorenz is a popular lolcow in some circles on here, but I’ve firsthand seen and heard some of the shit she puts up with. I’m not at all surprised this is the effect it’s had.
I don’t care if you don’t like her, fuck off if this is funny to you.
The journalism industry is one of the foulest, most toxic viper’s nests you’ll find, and 90% of that is because the people in it are spoiled brats who grew up to be passive-aggressive assholes who smile in your face as they shove a knife between your ribs
There’s a lot my industry peers do, that I don’t agree with and sometimes hate. But I don’t take any pleasure in the fact that strangers send them anonymous threats to rape them or kill their kids or tell them to commit suicide, nor do I think it’s something you just get used to
I was so annoyed by this post that I forgot to do the thing I normally do. So Sarah Jaffe, labor journalist, has never mentioned Chris Smalls by name on Twitter, in her book, in any piece she’s written
Until yesterday, after an historic labor victory. This is all she has to say
On the Belabored podcast Jaffe hosts with Michelle Chen, no Amazon worker was interviewed, but instead two academics (who are highly respected, mind you, but are not connected to the union drives) to talk *about* Amazon workers instead
And it isn’t as if they don’t mind putting the spotlight on individuals at other times, such as Chen’s article on organizing in Minnesota highlighting white worker William Stolz
Every adult in this young woman’s life failed her miserably
Correction: every adult except her father, who to this day is shouting into the ether about the sicko who groomed and preyed on his daughter (h/t @DeemTheDreem)
That Vanity Fair piece is going to press for Black history month.
Nasty business, man.
It’s basically this all over again — blatant fabrications that use fictional stories and celebrity stand-ins in place of legitimate analysis, published by magazines whose subscriber base is mostly white women
At least Wallace had the decency to disavow her own malpractice after her mother, Faith Ringgold, excoriated Black Macho
Lemieux, who wrote the foreword for the 2015 edition, comes from a generation of writers wholly detached from academic, journalistic, and community integrity
My Jewish Russian brother-in-law literally cannot go back to Ukraine to see his sick mother because he will be drafted into militia service alongside neo-Nazis.
He can’t send money either, because money transfers to Donetsk are blanket barred due to anti-terrorism financing laws
All of these realities might as well be a Hearts of Iron campaign to journalists like Justin. They have no stakes and seek to acquire no knowledge because all of this shit is just a game viewed through a computer screen
