Finding your purpose is simple but not easy

With 7 career changes and getting laid off 3 times…

I felt like I failed at everything 😔

Last year it seemed

I STILL didn't know what I wanted to be when I grew up

My wake up call came from a series of events

🧵
Getting laid off from a cool job on the innovation team at a bank was hard, but the last layoff stung the most.

I shattered my target

They still let me go

Despite what grandma says.

There’s no security in being employed

My dad passed away last year.

He had been counting down the days to retirement since his 30s.

He passed away with a year to go.

I questioned:

What am I doing?

What is the point of anything?

My husband and I examined what was holding us back…

…then sold everything.

We sold everything

to have the freedom to do anything.

But…

I still felt aimless.

The blank canvas was overwhelming.

I’ve been meeting with a coach to try to figure out my purpose.

He said,

“You’ve been successful at everything you ever did.”

In shock, I said,

"but I got laid off 3 times.

and I’ve changed my career 7 times.”

"Yeah,
but you moved forward…

every

single

time."
I was so focused on not reaching my expected outcome that

I missed all the wins along the way.

How many times do we do that throughout our lives?
Things were tough after my dad died

then getting laid off from a project I poured my heart and soul into

I was in a funk, depressed, anxious, and lost

#100DaysOfNoCode and @dvassallo's #SmallBets gave me hope

I built 15 websites and apps in 2 months.

Still wasn't sure where to focus.

How am I meant to figure out my calling in life?

I’ve tried 7 careers
I have a coach
I started all these projects
and…

I still don’t know

Then I had a breakthrough with my small bets.

Now I know.

I want to create more moments of happiness for others.

I want to help you transition to a new career

and live the life that's waiting for you

Will this be THE thing I dedicate my life to?

Maybe 🤷🏻‍♀️

Likely, it’s the thing I do

PLUS all of the other things I want to do…

I recently learned about the term “multipotentialite” from @emiliewapnick’s #Tedtalk

All my life I felt I didn’t belong. What @emiliewapnick helped me realize is,

Society is designed for the linear path of the specialist

but the world needs both generalists and specialists ❤️‍🩹

So I’m building my tribe of multipotentialites
The secret to finding your purpose is simple but not easy

✅ Get out there and try many things

✅ Build, create, write, talk to people, find your tribe

✅ Cut yourself some slack
If you’re stuck,

with anything

doesn’t have to be career oriented

let’s chat.

Here's my 30 minute video on The Power of Asking Questions

I'd like to thank @Kamphey for the nudge. It wasn't as scary as I thought and @loom was incredibly easy to use.

No time for a video? Summary 👇

Asking questions is a theme throughout my life starting when I got in trouble all the time as a kid for asking too many questions
I had an upbringing where things were very binary

How I built a cat facial recognition app that got 72K users within 4 months of release

🧵 Image
Working at a venture studio I was assigned an AI project, technology to see if your cat was happy or not. My mission was to turn it into a multimillion dollar company.

Step 1: Discovery - figure out who this is for

Cat owners?
Veterinarians?
Pet pharma?
Pet insurance?
Other?
Step 2: Discovery - run experiments

I infiltrated cat communities on Twitter, FB, IG, Reddit to find options for problems to solve

Problem 1: End of life decisions - pet owner: I don’t know if it’s time to let go.

It's a heartbreaking decision. Pets are family 🐱🐶

Day 39/39 #100DaysOfNoCode

Shipped my first digital product!

Great learning experience.

Reflection:

🧵
Biggest challenge:

I got stuck on trying to figure out how to get the properties to display on the page without the table. @HainingMax helped.

Create table then open a page from a cell. Anything in the table displays as a property Image
Databases are what makes @NotionHQ special. You can:

• see a calendar right on the page
• see how items connect in a calendar
• store files
• create tags for filtering

This is just the beginning
