My STATEMENT on the Amazon workers' fight (thread):

There are two historic stories being told today about the labor movement.

In the northeast, we’re seeing one of the most consequential victories for unions play out, with a historic win for Amazon workers in Staten Island.

In the deep south—win or lose—the progress made there is just as consequential for what the future holds for labor. We must ensure as this process plays out that every vote is counted.

The results in both New York and Alabama make one thing clear: there is an exciting future for working people to organize even against the biggest and richest companies with the harshest anti-union campaigns.

At Bessemer, we brought the numbers so much closer, and we know that in time we will win. We cannot and should not abandon the South—there’s such potential for organizing more than ever.

We believe the work of organizing Amazon is part of a broader project of building power for working people in the region. UNITE HERE is proud to have helped support the amazing work led by RWDSU, UFCW, and ALU.

We are so proud of the rank-and-file leaders from UNITE HERE’s Black Leadership Group who dedicated time to this effort. Many of these same leaders helped us win in the Georgia Senate race—and together we are reclaiming the South.

This is what solidarity looks like, and we as a union movement need to do more together. We all need to think broadly with a bold vision for what we can accomplish in this critical time of possibility for the union movement.

No one can take on the biggest beasts alone.
