Our latest paper led by the amazing @antonyagonzalez. Fun to think we started chatting about this idea in grad school :) We show that that the way parents talk to their kids perpetuates inequality. Parents want their kids to believe that success stems from effort (1/3)
So they often choose to explain differences in success by differences in effort. Parents transmit these beliefs to their kids. And, when you tell kids that some people have more because they worked harder, kids give more resources to the person who already has more (2/3).
These findings have implications for education programs that teach kids they can become successful and change through effort. Is this really the right language or can it perpetuate inequality? Our paper is linked here: bit.ly/3DFiGNZ (3/3)
