Children were forced into Catholic-run schools, regardless if their parents had converted to Catholicism or not. Popes have apologized for African slavery, sexual abuse for "sins" against Jews, women and European Roma. But always to God, not to the people.
We must continue to focus on the bedrock issue of racism and colonialism, and that is the Doctrine of Discovery that allowed for the wholesale colonization of the non-European, non-Christian world.
This resistance goes back to the Papal Bull of 1493 when Pope Alexander VI authorized Spain and Portugal to conquer the Americas and convert, colonize and enslave the Indigenous people.
The Bull stated that any land not inhabited by Christians was available to be “discovered,” claimed and exploited by Christian rulers. Indigenous peoples only had the right of occupancy and it could be abolished.
The papal bull of discovery gave the Europeans permission to allow enslaved peoples from Africa to be traded to the “new world.”
The Doctrine of Discovery is a late medieval view of the world, but it remains in place today. The vestiges of colonialism are still with us — the so-called Third World is composed largely of former colonies that are struggling to regain their sovereignty. - Doug Cuthand
