Welcome to the live reporting thread of the #FIHProLeague clash of #INDvENG (M). This is the 1st of 2 games between the two teams, who will draw first blood by winning the first contest?
Both teams come out for the national anthems. England lead by Thomas Sorsby, while India led by Amit Rohidas, who has captained India over their last 3 games. We are moments away from the start of this one!
Q1 1’ IND 0-0 ENG (M)
England get us underway. They’ll be attacking from the left to right donned in their white kits. India in their traditional blue jerseys.
Ansel with the first chance and a shot of the game! He enters the Indian D from the center & goes right. Indian Defense, wary of a foot foul allows a shot, but its off target.
India haven’t really settled into the game yet. They generally grow into the game as time goes on. That is especially why scoring against them early is particularly necessary.
Manpreet gets into the English circle and has India’s first shot from the left on a tight angle. But the English keeper keeps his legs closed and saves.
India were growing into the game over the past few minutes and they have made it count! We are back level thanks to Abhishek’s powerful finish from the left!
A tale of two halves in that quarter. England with early dominance of possession and territory and a goal from a PC by Bandurak. India got back into it though and mounted their high press. It lead to a goal by Abhishek, off a great assist by Shamsher.
Q2 18’ IND 1-1 ENG (M)
That quarter break came at a good time for England as India had all the momentum. A much more balanced start to the 2nd Q with the ball mostly changing hands in the midfield.
India trying a lot of aerial balls over the English defense today. Indian coach Reed promised they’d be trying a lot of new things; looks like his team is delivering on it.
Ansel with a great turn to beat two defenders and get into the circle. He takes a shot at the top right corner that is saved by Pathak, who is in goal for India in the 2nd Q.
A very calculated and jittery 2nd Q so far. Both teams trying different ways to open up the other’s defense, but game staying in the middle of the field for the most part.
Jugraj with great defensive work to win the ball in Indian circle and great interplay between him & Hardik, but Hardik’s attempted pass into the circle is off the back stick.
It’s a mess in the circle. There’s 6 players and the English keeper around the ball. The ball takes a touch from Sanford and goes in. Shamsher will get the goal.
It’s all square. England took the lead early in the 1st Q. India equalized. India then took the lead late in the 2nd quarter, but England responded instantly. India’s PC defense has not been great this season & once again it’s come to haunt them.
Q3 31’ IND 2-2 ENG (M)
India get us underway in the second half. They will be attacking from the left to right.
Dangerous from India! Abhishek wins the ball in a dangerous area and sends a pass into Lakra who is free in the circle, but the pass is behind a running Lakra!
India have a chance to break in numbers! The attempted pass to Lakra could have had India away 3 on 1. But its a great tackle by Sanford before Lakra could receive the ball!
It’s saved by Sreejesh. It’s Ansell this time with the attempt. It’s to the right again, but this time Sreejesh gets his leg to it and Jaskaran clears.
Chance for India! Harmanpreet with nifty work in the circle and he finds Jaskaran who can take a shot. But he loses balance and ball hits the back of his stick.
India attack down their right wing through Abhishek and Lakra, but they are quickly crowded out by 5 English defenders who harry them into losing possession.
India with multiple opportunities to catch England out on a break, but their passing has let them down, while England’s defense has stayed very disciplined!
India with one final attempt through a long pass by Jugraj, but his usually reliable passing lets him down as the ball goes dangerously high before going into the circle.
Another edgy quarter. India still with no PC attempts in this game. With Harmanpreet and Jugraj in there, they will want to give them a chance to do what they do best. England got 1 PC in that quarter, but Sreejesh saved it. Who will win this tight contest?
Q4 46’ IND 2-2 ENG (M)
India try another long pass into the circle, but once again England cut it off at the top of the circle. Their work in a set defense has been terrific all night.
It’s a really poor injection. The ball casually rolls in off the attempted pass and England have to take it and go out to make it legal and Indian defence holds.
Harmanpreet with the ball into circle, that is passed around and the first shot from Hardik is saved. The ball falls to Surender, but his shot is saved too.
India take the lead. It’s perfectly placed into the bottom left corner. Any further left & it’d hit the post. Powerful flick by Harmanpreet! He won it he scored it.
England win the ball from Hardik who had stitched a great run together. They try an aerial ball that could’ve released them 1 on 1, but its ruled to be dangerous.
Nervous few minutes for India as England ramp up the pressure in search of an equaliser. But so far so good for them. They have 3 more minutes left to defend.
Miss! Harmanpreet receives the ball & he passes it to Jugraj, but he can’e trap it. It falls to Mandeep & he hits it into the back of the goal, but its disallowed for height.
That last minute stroke goal has sent this game to a shoot-out! India will rue their missed PC when England didn’t have a keeper in the goal. England will have a little bit of the momentum. But will that matter in a shoot-out? We’ll find out soon enough!
