Really?! Russia is doing all these shenanigans about being paid in rubles because it desperately needs to stabilize the ruble, not because currency no longer matters

Huntington’s Clash of Civilisations framework is obviously useless to explain the contemporary world. There is a clash, yes, but between visions of the future not past civilisations

The idea that only Putin and not Russian society is to blame for these crimes is very deficient, morally and intellectually
After all Russian society was never able to learn from its past, never came to terms with its imperial legacy and today the popular support for its war of genocide against Ukraine is, to all evidence, sky high
Putin is of course a product of that history and that society

What strikes me is how the US is no longer a global actor. It’s incapable of action, complicated as it is. Its priority is to run away so completely it can avoid being blamed for anything. A giant NGO
In Ukraine there was a spectrum of actions that could have been taken - not to solve the problem but to avoid catastrophic outcomes. Keep the embassy in Kyiv and surround it with air defences. Move it to Lviv and deploy 500 Marines to provide for its safety.
Declare a NFZ over regions with nuclear power plants. Issue an ultimatum against the use of certain banned munitions and weapons. And so on and so forth…
