Welcome to the live reporting thread of the #FIHProLeague clash of #INDvENG (M). This is the 2nd match after both teams went head to head yesterday & it took a shoot-out for India to prevail. Can England strike back today?
Both teams come out for the national anthems. James Albery captaining England, who rotate their captains fairly frequently. Amit Rohidas, who comes from the state of Odisha, leads India out. India with a few changes to their squad today. Mandeep Singh a notable name missing.
Q1 1’ IND 0-0 ENG (M)
England get us underway. They are in their red kits, and will be attacking from the left to right in the first half.
A much more balanced start to the game compared to the early English domination last evening. Game mostly being played in the middle of the pitch. No significant attacks yet.
Surender Kumar gets into the English circle from the left baseline, but the ball rolls out of his control and out of play as he tries to get closer to the goal.
England with a really clever routine to score this. Sanford on the right deflects the ball into the goal. Nothing the keeper could do on that one. Well worked routine.
Jugraj takes that PC for India. It’s saved on first attempt but by an English foot. The second attempt is a ripper, but it goes off target to the left.
India break on the counter and they have loads of players in good positions around the circle. It’s Rohidas who looks for Lalit in the circle, but the pass is off target.
India do the exact same routine as England. The keeper saves the deflection that came from the right, but the ball falls to Manpreet and he scores it with ease.
A balanced half, as both teams find a goal apiece from unlikely sources. First ever goal for Sanford in Int’l matches. First one in nearly three years for Manpreet.
Q2 18’ IND 1-1 ENG (M)
India with the early territory to begin the 2nd Q. They have a couple of forays into the English circle, but no harm done, as they cant convert the chances into shot.
It’s been India’s quarter so far. They have dominated possession and territory. But they have lacked the final pass required to open up chances for shots.
Harmanpreet has India’s 100th goal! He won that corner, he buried it with extreme ferocity. It’s within the keepers reach, but he cant react fast enough. India lead.
India attack right away from the restart too. Shilanand Lakra with two quick runs from the right. The first results in a shot off target. The second one wins a PC for India.
India on the attack again! It’s Jarmanpreet with tons of space in the circle from the right. He has options across the goal, but chooses to go for the reverse and skies it.
England get into the Indian circle and Griffiths has a run at Sreejesh. But Sreejesh charges out and stays big, giving no room and takes the shot on his torso & India clear.
India review. They want a foot in the circle. There doesn’t appear to be a foot. That is what the video umpire decides. India lose their referral at the stroke of half time.
India bossing that second quarter. England barely got a look in there. Two penalty corner goals from Harmanpreet taking the game away from England. The once chance that fell England’s way was well defended by Sreejesh. 1 exciting half of hockey left!
Q3 31’ IND 3-1 ENG (M)
India get us underway in the 2nd half. India have the lead. England have a game to chase. Another pulsating half of hockey awaits!
India with the territory to start the 2nd half again as England sit really deep. This might be a strategy to try catch India out on a counter attack by the English.
Jugraj with a powerful pass into the circle that deflects off an English stick and is heading into the goal. It wouldn’t have counted but Mazarello pushes it away to be safe
England on the ascendancy here. They have sustained spell of possession and territory here around the Indian circle. India are great counter attackers though!
The duel between the drag flickers continues! Sam Ward get England right back into it with a low flick to the right. Krishan Pathak couldv’e done better here you feel
A goal for Harmanpreet to complete his hat-trick. 2 goals for Sam Ward. This game is on a kinfe’s edge. We have another thriller of a 4th quarter in store here. Which way will this game go?
Q4 48’ IND 4-3 ENG (M)
Shilanand Lakra receives a green card. England with a player advantage for 2 minutes. Can they make it count?
It’s Nicholas Park now who gets the green card. India will get the player advantage as soon as Shilanand Lakra is allowed back in after serving his suspension.
England pressing high up the field now in search for an equaliser. Indian defense holds steady and negates their attacks though. 8 minutes for England to find a goal!
England going without a keeper for the final 3 minutes of the game. They have to be careful to not let India counter attack. A goal for India would likely seal this contest.
England going side to side in search for the equaliser. Indian defense holding strong. Remember they were in a similar position yesterday and conceded with 12s on the clock.
India hold on today! Their defence stays calm and clears any English attempt into the circle. Two great battles over two days. India take 5 points from the possible 6. England gave it their all over the two days and ran India close. Hockey at its best!
