/ In the above image, President Zelenskyy is seen earlier today, witnessing the aftermath of the torture and murder of unarmed Ukrainians civilians (including the elderly, women, and children) by Russian soldiers in Bucha.
/ In this close-up we can see somewhat greater facial detail. In the central portion of President Zelenskyy's forehead, we can see the superficial manifestations two juxtaposed muscles. (Photo: AFP, Anadolu Agency/Getty Images)
/ The horizontal furrows on the mid-level of the central forehead are formed by active contraction of the frontalis pars medialis. These are pulling upward (superiorly).
/ The vertical furrows in the lower portion of Zelenskyy's central forehead are formed contractions of the depressor glabellae, depressor supercilii, and corrugator supercilii. These are pulling downward (inferiorly) and inward (medially).
/ Moreover, the entire width of each eyebrow is also vectored downward, hooding his eyelids.
/ President Zelenskyy is looking down to his right (of course, he may be looking at bodies of the deceased). Of note, the lower right quadrant (his right) is the direction we most often look when we're trying to process sadness, grief, and agony.
/ Both of President Zelenskyy's upper eyelids as well as his lower eyelids are partially actively contracted/partially closed.
/ The corners of his mouth are also down-turned. In addition his nostrils are flared and his mustache area is tightened (primarily vertically, but also somewhat horizontally stretched).
/ On the left aspect of his neck, it appears that President Zelenskyy's external jugular vein is moderately distended. This is probably a manifestation of what is a momentary partial valsalva-like phenomenon associated with suppression of sadness and tears.
/ SUMMARY: In this image, President Zelenskyy is displaying sadness, grief, and agony upon witnessing the aftermath of War Crimes, indeed, Genocide in Bucha. He is actively suppressing tears.
