WHY THERE IS MILK SHORTAGE IN THE COUNTRY.
As the drought persisted and cost of animal feeds rose, feeds manufacturers last year requested the government to allow importation of yellow maize.
THREAD 🧵
This would lower the cost of feeds as the manufacturers wouldn't need to compete for white maize which is also used as human food.
2/10
The government kept on dithering and only allowed the importation to go on in December. It however had a condition that the yellow maize be 100% non-GMO.
3/10
This condition couldn't be met and the feeds manufacturers asked for a waiver. That waiver came in late March when the GMO purity was reduced to 99.1%.
4/10
The high cost of feeds has resulted in reduced production of milk, eggs and pork. This has resulted in high prices and shortages. The waiver was too little too late as war in Ukraine has complicated things further.
5/10
Corn prices are rising and getting supplies will be hard.
It is absurd when people blame the milk shortage on the drought or global issues. The shortage is purely out of incompetence by the government.
6/10
The government knows the quantities of maize available in the country and when stocks fall below a certain level imports are needed in order to contain prices.
7/10
Why waste all those months before authorising imports? Maybe somebody wanted to benefit from the high prices. It is sad that every sector of the economy has fallen captive to merciless #StateCaptureKE.
8/10
The citizens have become mere cannon folder in a vicious battle between cartels & economic parasites.
9/10
The regime knows there will always be people foolish enough to excuse their mess. They can blame anything but themselves and get away with it. For how long shall we continue like this?

WHY OUR MIDDLE CLASS CANNOT TRIGGER A REVOLUTION.
Every time we sink to a new low, people always wonder why we can't have a revolution. I will address some of the reason why our middle class cannot cause a revolution.
THREAD 🧵
I will begin by breaking your heart. Our middle class is too small to trigger a revolution. Most economic based revolutions are triggered by the middle class. We are a poor country. Poverty is a normal thing in Kenya hence more poverty just generates more adaptation.
2/19
For as long as poverty is normalised, there will be no resistance. No one fights normal things. The tiny middle class is too small to start anything. A revolution requires numbers. When the middle class falls back to poverty no one notices because the numbers are too small.

WHY @CMAKenya NEEDS TO RETHINK I-REITS ENTIRELY
Perusing through the 2021 audited financials of ILAM Fahari I-REIT raises a lot of questions. Out of the KShs 298 million rental income, ICEA LION Asset Management Limited was paid KShs 70 Million as Asset Management Fees
THREAD 🧵
Cooperative Bank of Kenya was paid KShs 26 million as Trustee, Custodial and other administrative fees.
Thus ICEA Lion Asset Management and Cooperative Bank earned a combined KShs 96 Million or 32% of the rental income.
2/8
This is more than the KShs 90 Million paid to the unit holders as the distribution for the year.
What exactly does ICEA do to warrant being paid KShs 70 Million? The total assets for the REIT amount to KShs 3.7 Billion.

The other day I wrote on the need for Safaricom to open up the MPesa payment gateway. This Friday, Safaricom will allow those from other networks such as Airtel Money to make payments directly to MPesa PayBill.
This should be extended to bank accounts. One should be able to make payment from any bank account to any MPesa PayBill/Till. Already, this is possible with some utilities and major paybill numbers but should be extended to all.
Eventually, Safaricom should make MPesa payment gateway network independent. Anyone with a registered mobile number should be able to register for and use MPesa whether they are on Safaricom or not.
The government banned importation of wheat from India over fears about a fungal disease. About 66% of our wheat imports comes from Russia and Ukraine. We can't access this source due to the war.
Currently, India is one of the few countries with wheat available for export. Millers have asked the government to lift the ban. If this doesn't happen, we could find ourselves with supermarket shelves empty of bread and other wheat products.
It is already embarrassing enough that a country of 1.4 Billion people has enough wheat for itself & some to spare. Yet a country of 50 million people & ample land has its people starving to death due to a drought.
WHY SOME CLAUSES OF THE CONSTITUTION SHOULD REMAIN ETERNAL
After much thought I have come to appreciate this concept of Basic Structure in the constitution. I think in future we should amend the constitution and protect certain clauses from any amendment.
THREAD
You see modern democracy is a brainless popularity contest. Imagine a situation where a very popular demagogue rises to power. The demagogue could even abolish the judiciary and any other institution checking his powers.
He could initiate constitution amendments to allow for this. It could pass with overwhelming numbers. In such a situation the people need to be protected from themselves and from democracy.
