Sport concussion is the leading cause of death & disability of people under 45 years.

Invited speaker Dr Antonio Belli explains that current diagnosis tools are not very specific or sensitive, but there is a lot of interest in developing new ones, based on biomarkers.

"Photonics can be helpful in being non-invasive and providing new parametres to help doctors make decisions", says Dr Jaume Mesquida, clinician at the ICU of Parc Taulí Hospital.

Dr Maria A. Poca, from the @VHIR_ , highlights the collaboration between their research group and the Medical Optics group at @ICFOnians , which has allowed to learn a about the pathophysiology of neurotraumatic injuries.

After the coffee break, Dr Raquel Delgado from the @HospitalSantPau talks about the benefits of continuously monitoring the brain with diffuse optics in helping acute stroke care or improve clinical outcome.

"In our operating room, we need a device to that measures directly the cerebral blood flow which is non-invasive, stable, reliable, with small electrodes, portable & with minimal interferences" says Ricard Valero, clinician at @hospitalclinic and @idibaps.

Joan Sánchez, cardiologist at @SJDbarcelona_ca, talks about optics in pediatrics and presents the #TinyBrainsEU project, a joint European effort to develop an integrated device to monitor the brain of newborn infants with structural heart problems.

Next, Marco Inzitari and Cristina Udina, clinicians at the @perevirgilicat and the @VHIR_ talk about brain and ageing and present the research that has been done, specially the MEDPHOTAGE study which measures the cerebral blood flow and the hemodynamics in older adults.

Finally, Lorenzo Cortese, postdoc researcher at @ICFOnians Medical Optics group, presents the #VASCOVID device, its latest achievements and the upcoming steps for the project.
