I criticised Labour when they were becoming a cult of one man, I’m sure as hell going to criticise the Tories now they’re doing the same. If they’re all going to claim that, as a party, they’re useless & can do nothing without the leadership of one, demonstrably flawed man, then
that needs to be put on their campaign leaflets!!

That said, I think for every day Johnson stays in office now, that’s another few dozen constituency votes lost. I’ve believed for a while his seat is vulnerable. Furthermore, I believe if Tories were to lose their PM, likely
their deputy PM too, during a GE (maybe a couple more high profile scalps too?), it could sink them for a generation. It would also solidify calls for #PR as Labour recognise they still can’t win outright against the worst Tory govt in living memory & the LibDems are the party to
unseat Tories.

I desperately want Johnson to go, but if he doesn’t I’m not going to lose too much sleep this side of the next GE.

Looking for insight & opinion on an incident I was party to a couple of days ago that has left me troubled.

I was travelling on a single carriageway A road, 60mph. Ahead I witnessed a young man (early 20’s?) essentially playing chicken with the traffic, walking in & out of the
live traffic with no regard to his, or anyone else’s safety. In between, he was observed to be holding his head in his hands & appeared to be in some distress.

I had a passenger with me that, in my opinion, made it unsafe for me to stop (not sure what I could do anyway, not
trained in this stuff). I called 999 & informed the police. I had poor signal but I believe they got the gist of what I was telling them.

A few miles (2-3) later I came upon an ambulance first responder vehicle which I flagged down. I informed the occupant (paramedic? 3 pips)

The law says it’s illegal to reveal someone’s tax status.

Why then is my tax status (PAYE) revealed to my employer’s finance department?

One’s tax status is only revealed when one wants to hide how little tax one pays, relative to the PAYE most of us pay.
If I tell you my
income (variable but around £50k), you can quickly calculate my tax liability almost to the penny. I’m not embarrassed either by the tax I pay, or the level of my earnings.
We need to stop singling individuals out, everyone’s tax status should be a matter of public record. For 99%+ of the population it essentially already is. This doesn’t reveal how much people earn, but in the case of non-doms, it does reveal who they pay their tax to.

1st world trucker problem. Let me rant about yesterday’s shift to give you a glimpse into a typical day driver’s experience.

Unusually for many operations I actually know 12 hours ahead of time what run I’m on, consequently I know roughly how long I’ll be out for.
I knew yesterday would be a 15hr day, so that means 3 meals on the road (I just can’t get up early enough for breakfast before I leave). Breakfast/lunch isn’t a problem, I actually have a kind of brunch, yoghurts, fruit, breakfast biscuits. Simples. For dinner I want a hot meal,
home cooked. Not only is it much cheaper but I’m struggling with my weight & this is much healthier. I use an electric lunchbox, literally as it sounds a traditionally shaped lunchbox with a heating element in the bottom. A pre portioned meal from the freezer in a foil container

We know it takes about 6 months to go from carnlicenct to earning as an LGV driver, now add in the speed at which DVLA can process tests & the pass rate. Overall we can expect around 800 new drivers per week to join then industry, 6 months after they decide to pursue a new career
Now add in to these gains the losses; between those who decide driving is no longer suitable for them & drivers retiring we’re losing possibly 250 per week. That means the net gain to the industry is just 550/week. By my rough calculations that means it will take around

Timeline to qualify as an LGV driver:

• Send off for you provisional, this can take 2-3 weeks currently, it used to be quicker.

• Apply for your theory test date, until you have the provisional entitlement on you licence the system won’t let you do this, so it must be done
in order. Theory test centres are busy currently so this could take a further 3-4 weeks.

• Sit your theory test & pass first time (well done 😉).

• Book your practical training course same day, maybe another 6 week wait as your training will coincide with your practical
test on the final day. Pass first or second time (pass rate ~58%). If you do have to retest that will obvs cost more & add another few weeks to the timeline.

• Having passed, book your CPC course. There’s different ways to do this, but you need your licence first. 6 week wait?

Let’s deal with this stupidity that says because we have more unemployed than vacancies in logistics all the unemployed can fill the vacancies we have.
As with any job, you need candidates living in the area of the vacancies. You then need them available for the hours required if the job. For haulage that is 24/7 with shifts up to 15hrs, possibly with unplanned nights out, weekend working & unsociable start/finish times.
You also need to understand that there is no such job as “lorry driver” rather there are hundreds of different jobs that involve the driving of a lorry, so to reduce them to just one job title is misleading. Many of these vacancies are highly specialised, such as fuel tankers,
