A Capitol Police officer testified at trial today that additional members of the pro-Trump mob that he helped push out of the Capitol on Jan. 6 were armed.
“I did feel a few butts of guns that day on peoples’ waist bands,” Officer Ronald Lucarino told jurors.
A defense attorney for Capitol rioter Dustin Thompson — echoing Trump’s speech on Jan. 6 — asked the officer whether the phrase “fight like hell” would described the mob’s actions.
Why are prosecutors focused on that particular battle? Because the defendant was right there, and witnessed it. He shows up in footage to the left of the doors, wearing his Trump beanie. He also shows up at the brutal battle at the tunnel on the western terrace.
Officer Reyes testified that he particularly remembered the rioter with the head tattoos, aka #InGodITrustRioter.
The government has rested its case. Defense up next.
Dustin Thompson’s wife — who sent a text saying “I will not post bail” to her husband and his co-defendant on Jan. 6 — will testify first for the defense.
Then the defendant himself plans to testify.

DOJ to Congress, on why they need more funds for Jan. 6 cases:
"Funding is critically needed to provide the USAO-DC with additional prosecutors and support personnel to respond to the increased caseload, litigation costs, and other court proceedings arising from these cases."
"Lacking additional funds, each of the 94 USAOs would need to incur a budget reduction to fund these prosecutions from within the USA’s current services level."
"The cases are unprecedented in scale..."
From DOJ's congressional budget submission for FY 2023, posted yesterday:
Closing arguments are set for today in Dustin Thompson's Jan. 6 trial. The 38-year-old college graduate is arguing that he was "following presidential orders."
But first, jurors are going to finish listening to the entirety of Trump's Jan. 6 speech.
Yesterday, Dustin Thompson told jurors that he is not a child and that he got dressed all by himself on Jan. 6.
"It was a plot, it was a scheme, it was a conspiracy ... that began at the highest levels of our government," Dustin Thompson's attorney argued. nbcnews.com/politics/justi…
Dustin Thompson, a 38-year-old Ohio man who admitted stealing a liquor bottle and a coat rack on Jan. 6, testified he felt “obligated” to storm the Capitol after hearing Trump’s speech.
Dustin Thompson — a married man and a graduate of The Ohio State University — told jurors he didn't have any strong male role models in his life and was hoping to gain the “respect” and “approval” of former President Donald Trump on Jan. 6. nbcnews.com/politics/donal…
Dustin Thompson, who was 36 when he stormed the Capitol and swiped a bottle of liquor and a coat rack, testified that he “went down the rabbit hole on the internet” after he lost his job at the beginning of the pandemic. nbcnews.com/politics/donal…
A lot of compelling testimony in the Dustin Thompson case today, but the most brutal line might’ve come from Thompson’s wife, a Democrat, about what she was doing on Jan. 6 when her husband was off stealing a coat rack:
“I was just enjoying the house being quiet,” she said.
Sarah Thompson (who said she voted for Obama, Clinton, and Biden) testified that she didn’t believe all of the nonsense conspiracy theories that her husband was consuming online after he lost his job at the beginning of the pandemic. She was still working, he was unemployed.
“If the president is giving you almost an order to do something, I felt obligated to do that,” testified Jan. 6 rioter Dustin Thompson, who told jurors he didn’t really have “any strong male figures” in his life and wanted to gain Trump’s “respect” and “approval."
Sentencing tomorrow for Florida Man Timothy Earl O’Malley, who stormed the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6 while wearing a softball batting helmet with “TRUMP IS MY PRESIDENT” bumper stickers on each side.
“THEY TRIED TO TRAP US INSIDE. BUT WE FOUGHT OUR WAY, ALL THE WAY IN THERE. AND WE FOUGHT OUR WAY BACK OUT, AND THEY TRIED TO TRAP US. WE’RE OUTSIDE. WE SWARMED THE CAPITOL, THOUGH. HOT DAMN, LEADING THE CHARGE. GETTIN’ IT ON.”
