AD thread 2: Immediately post the 1962 war, changes were made across three vectors – AD Command & Control structure, modern equipment from America & USSR and a Surface to Air missile defence system (SA-2). #IAFHistory (26/41)
IAF setup “Air Defence Area” HQs at Ambala, Jodhpur & Barrackpore headed by Air Cmde’s, responsible for all AD in the Area. In 1966, these were renamed as Air Defence Control Centre (ADCC) & co-located with Cmd HQ. These days the org is led by an AVM designated as AD Cdr. 27/
“Ex – Shiksha” was conducted in Nov 63. RAF sent Javelins, RAAF Canberras & USAF F-100s & two mobile radar units having MPS 11/ 16 radars. Javelins were deployed at Kalaikunda, Canberras at Agra, F-100s at Palam & the radar units (named 311 & 411 SUs) at Patiala and Rampurhat 28/
The performance of IAF pilots & controllers was appreciated. Best interceptions were done by “Charlie” Puranik from 411 SU. 6 x American Star Sapphire units (500 SU series) with FPS 89 & 100 radars & 12 x P-30 units (200 SU series) were approved for induction. 29/
FPS 100 was a 2-D Surveillance Radar & FPS-89 a Ht Finding Radar. These were huge and radomed.(Pak had its fore-runner version- FPS 20 & FPS 6). Originally, the installation was overseen by the engineers of Bendix Radio Corporation. US Assistance was withdrawn in Sep 65. 30/
Since only two SUs had been installed, No. 1 Electronic Engineering and Installation Unit (EE&IU) was raised for completing this task. The tech officers assigned to the task performed admirably. Much later the unit was renamed as 17 SU. 31/
Locations of Star Sapphire units were planned to counter both Pak & China. As per the US concept, complete works services for technical; admin and domestic accommodation were carried out simultaneously at each location to make the units self-sufficient in all respects. 32/
IAF switched over to the American terminology. SOC was renamed as Air Defence Direction Centre (ADDC), Controllers were now Directors, Chief Controller was Sector Director and so on.Trades of Rad/Opr and Ftr/Pltr were merged and renamed as ADSO. 33/
Plotting & display of info was done on big Perspex Vertical Plotting Boards. Brightly lit Ops rooms, were now dimly lit. Indep troposcatter com network was planned to reduce dependence on P&T lines. Rdr & Comm Project Office (RCPO) and Dte of Plan ADGES were created at AirHQ 34/
USSR agreed to provide SA-2 surface to missiles for 17 firing, 4 tech & one trg battalion. These were deployed - 5 in Chandigarh-Ambala, 6 at Calcutta, 6 at Delhi & one trg and support at Baroda. Eqpt arrived by Apr 64 and by Oct 65, USSR had delivered 144 SA-2 missiles. 35/
SA-2 purchase from USSR was not taken well by the USA. In now declassified CIA files, they tracked the move of the SA-2 systems as they left USSR & were installed in India. Soon after, USA left IAF in sep65 with only two radars installed, leaving us to deal with the rest. 36/
The SA-2 system had a V-750 missile and two-stage propellants. The control surfaces on the two fins were guided by radio command. The target was tracked by radar which fed a signal to a computer. It was designed to engage targets between the ranges of 7-40 km. 37/
Subsequent shipments after the 1965 conflict boosted the strength by an addl 8 sqns, to 48 launchers and 75 missiles, all of which were delivered between 1968-72. 34 Sqn became the first Trg sqn and 46 Sqn, commanded by ML Sethi (later Air Mshl) was the first combat sqn. 38/
SA-2 were organised as clusters. 6 SAM “Wings” were formed with sites around the wing in a 50km radius. The philosophy had remained the same – in addition to eyes, have missile protection for key cities & installations. 24 and 31 wings were disbanded in 1992, the rest remain. 39/
ML Sethi was a pioneer. He was amongst the first batch of Air Force personnel to be trained on a SAM system. As Officer Commanding of an operational SAM squadron , undeterred by hardships, he achieved the distinction of the first SAM unit in IAF to become operational. 40/
Having covered the birth of AD in India & the multi-spectral sweeping changes made in the 1960s, the next thread will focus on the “rubber hitting the road” – how the AD setup fared in the 1965 and 71 wars 41/41

@IAF_MCC is responsible for the Air Defence (AD) of India. The ground AD system has played a pivotal role in shaping the outcomes of conflicts. Yet its historical evolution remains largely unknown & its heroes unsung. This thread attempts to change that. #IAFHistory (1/25)
The IAF’s initial role entailed support to the Army. On 09 Oct 44, 8 Sqn converted to Spitfires with AD being its primary role, thus becoming the first Fighter sqn. The CO, Sqn Ldr Coombes, nicknamed it "Pursoot" -the two Os symbolising two eyes looking out for bogies!. 2/
But eyes that were needed were the radars! Prior to 1942, even the word "Radar" was treated as a secret & Indians were not allowed to get close. When the war in SEA started to gain importance, the first batch of Indian Radar officers were commissioned & sent to UK for trg. 3/

To become a QFI (Qualified Flying Instructor) is a dream for pilots. The world of QFI’s has been categorized into ratings. The IAF’s rating system till the early 2000s had a pinnacle QFI rating of A1. This thread is about the 38 A1’s in IAF’s 90-year history. #IAFHistory (1/24)
Ratings were C (probationary), B2 (makings of a good instructor), B1 (capable instructor), A2 (very capable, skillful instructor with considerable exp) & A1 (instructor of exceptional ability, skill, & experience). Only A1 Instructors could categorize another to A1. (2/24)
The rating was modelled on CFS (Central Flying School) of UK where the initial 70 odd instructors of IAF were trained before formation of Flying Instructors School. The first two IAF A1 instructors were categorized by CFS in 1949 and 1951. (3/24)

Air Mshl TS “Timki” Brar, PVSM, AVSM had an illustrious career in the @IAF_MCC and retired as the Vice Chief. Only a few know that till a few years prior to retirement, he was on the path to being Chief of the IAF. This thread is to take you through his career. #IAFHistory (1/17)
Born on 9 Nov 1925, he hailed from a family from Ferozepur/ Moga with strong connect with service in armed forces. His grandfather Capt Hira Singh has a village named after him. Lt Gen Kuldip Singh Brar, of Golden Temple fame, was his first cousin (2/17) Capt Hira Singh
He studied at the Doon school and while encouraged to join the Army, his family was averse to IAF. He put his foot down to become a pilot or a paratrooper only. At which his mother relented – “At least be in the cockpit if you have to be in the air”(3/17)

MiG-21 (Fishbed, Vikram, Trishul, Bison, Mongol) and the innumerable variants in @IAF_MCC 's long service history have consistently been a conundrum for enthusiasts. This thread attempts an (over)simplified evolution of the MiG-21 types in IAF service. #IAFHistory #MiG21 (1/27) A unique formation flight of all MiG-21 variants in service
MiG-21F-13 Type-74 Fishbed-C was the first in IAF. 6 of these were acquired in Mar 1963 & served till 1968. F= Forsirovannyy ("Uprated") and 13 denotes the K-13 Air-to-Air Missiles it carried. They carried the serial numbers BC-816 to BC-821. (2/27)
Powered by the R-11 engine, pitot tube was below the engine intake, unlike subsequent types, where it was on top.The armament was the K-13 missile & one 30mm cannon. Designed for intercepts, its short endurance, lack of radar & poor single shot kill probability was a problem(3/27)

Mystery Trivia: The @IAF_MCC Service numbers for officers were put in place only in Oct 1942 (10+ years after formation) and unlike RAF/RFC that started with the number 1, IAF started with the service number 1551. Why 1551 remains a mystery (and an itch)? #IAFHistory (1/5)
Prior to Oct 1942, the Air Force Lists only carried the names, organized in seniority with no reference to any service number. Possibly, the small size of the IAF did not require an elaborate numbering system. (2/5)
Via an Air Force order, all officers appearing in the Air Force List of Oct 1942 were given a service number starting from 1551, in descending order of seniority. Implicitly, officers that died or left prior to Oct 42, never had a service number. We counted 93 such officers!(3/5)

Air Mshl Minoo Merwan Engineer - the most decorated & battle-hardened @IAF_MCC officer who participated in all campaigns from WWII to the 1971 war and yet, remains much less spoken compared to his contemporaries. This is his service story. #IAFHistory (1/17)
Born in 1921 at Karachi in a Zoroastrian family where his father was the Div Eng for the Northwestern Railway. The sixth of the siblings & third brother to join the IAF, Minoo was low down in the sibling ‘food-chain’. He had a tough time keeping up with his brothers. (2/17) Minoo, Aspy and Ronnie Engineer, all awarded the D F C. Jang
Minoo had a jovial self & went to Elphinstone College, Bombay. He was commissioned with the 4 PC, a lot of 72, with many illustrious names. After training, he was posted to 2 CDF at Juhu flying Wapitis & in 1943 to 6 Sqn under Mehar Singh on the Hurricane IIB. (3/17)
