The answer depends, but the top 2 are JavaScript and Python. In my opinion, Python will have the most impact on your resume because of how widely it is used in tech. But, if you are into web development then learn JavaScript.
In tech Linux is used everywhere! From phones, to back-end databases, to front-end web servers, and all of the hardware and software in between. Basically, Linux is a foundational operating system that will help you stand out!
Like Linux, the core to everything in tech is networking. It is what allows us to communicate on twitter, search on google, text our friends, and FaceTime our families. Without networking, tech doesn't exist as we know it. It is a key skill to have!
Now that you have a foundation, it's time to learn how tech companies are building their applications and services. The cloud helps you develop and scale apps fast. Because of this, cloud professionals are in high demand and you can be too, if you put in the work!
Landing your first role in tech can be a challenge. In 2022 part of getting hired is knowing how to market yourself. What you post online the world can see. Use this to your advantage! Share your journey.
By doing this you can build great relationships.
Here are some tips on how to market yourself:
Twitter
Leverage twitter by connecting with other professionals in tech. Comment, like, and retweet on their post. When you post add value. If you learned something cool, share it! If you got an interview share it! When yo get hired, share it! Let us celebrate with you!
LinkedIn
LinkedIn is a great place to connect with professionals, recruiters, hiring managers and leaders in tech. Be creative on here. Join conversations. Write articles about the tech you are learning. Doing this may help someone, get you an interview, or even get you hired!
Blog
Here is where you want to show your journey in detail. Let people know who you are and what you bring to tech. A blog will challenge you to improve your writing. Plus, when you write about technical topics it will force you to obtain a deeper understanding in that area.
YouTube
This isn't for everybody. It can be fun, rewarding, and draining all at the same time. But if you do it right it can open doors in your career. Much of what we do in tech is customer facing. By creating videos you show hiring managers your tech and presentation skills.
Now that you have gained the skills and are putting yourself out there. Let's talk about your resume.
Resume
Just as important is to ensure your resume is up to date, tailored to the job you are applying for and that it clearly displays the work you have done. The design of your resume is not important. It just needs to be professional and have all the things that I mentioned.
This is the best time to be entering into tech. Resources are free and abundant. To be successful, create a plan to gain the skills you need. Network with professionals that are already doing the things you desire to do in tech!
1. Projects - lots of them. You don’t have to lead them. But if you can great. Either way be involved in everything!
2. Higher level certifications - 20 entry level certifications will get you 20 entry level jobs!
3. Be more professional - take yourself and your career serious. Don’t just show up for a check! Show up and show out!
4. Find a mentor - this can be a person, books, videos, or course. Either way find someone that is doing or has done what you want to do and follow them!
5. Challenge yourself - take on more challenging tasks at work. Typical breakfix tickets will not make you grow! Be the person they call when everything goes wrong. Don’t back down!
