🧵In 1994, CASEL was founded and the term Social Emotional Learning was coined at The Fetzer Institute. The founder of The Fetzer Institute, John Fetzer, was a devout follower of occultist Alice Bailey. Bailey is known as the “Mother of the New Age Movement” and founder of
The Lucis Publishing Company (which she originally named The Lucifer Publishing Company.) Fetzer followed in her footsteps and worked toward the spread of a global consciousness and spiritual enlightenment. She called for a New World Order that brought universal education,
shared resources distributed fairly, & disarmament. Additionally, she supported the United Nations and directed her followers to do the same. One of the founders of CASEL, David Sluyter, also worked for The Fetzer Institute as a program officer, vice president, president & CEO,
and senior advisor. He still works as a consultant there. The Fetzer Institute mission states "Inspired by our founder John E. Fetzer, we encourage each other to discover new ways of knowing our sacred world and explore our personal spiritual journeys as we work toward
transformed communities and societies in which all people can flourish." The New Age religion practices a vast range of beliefs and practices including Reincarnation, You can become God, Jesus Christ Was Just an Enlightened Man, and There are Many Ways To Heaven.
It combines aspects of cosmology, astrology, esotericism, alternative medicine, music, psychology, and philosophy. The Fetzer Insitute lists their work as a "Spiritual Formation" explaining "With traditional and emerging forms of religious and spiritual life, we are cultivating
spaces that help us transform this work into societal change. When we foster the love, courage, and hope that comes from spiritual practice and relationships, we can transform our hearts, our homes, our workplaces, and our world."
Their work also includes "Healing the heart of US democracy" which states "Activating love is the heartbeat of Fetzer’s democracy work." They claim "Through unlikely collaborations, we are bridging divides. Together, we are fostering pluralism, liberty, and unity, all toward
a new birth of democracy supported by our many faith-based and spiritual lenses of love." The question is not if you practice this religion. The question is why was CASEL and Social Emotional Learning created there and what the hell is it doing in our schools? #ExpelSEL

CASEL once had the 1994 meeting at The Fetzer Institute listed on their history page but it has been removed. You can still go to the history page however & find one of the founders listed, David J. Sluyter, who has had numerous roles with the institue including President
The Dreamkeepers by critical race theorist, Gloria Ladson-Billings, discusses Culturally Relevant/Responsive Pedagogy/Teaching (which she coined). This teaching is the praxis of critical race theory in K-12 education delivered through Social Emotional Learning. #ExpelSEL
Elena Aguilar’s book Coaching for Equity describes (what she says) is a real life scenario she encountered with a white teacher in her first year of teaching. She describes how she begins coaching the teacher to transform for equity. Apparently, the teacher was struggling (as
many first year teachers do), but Elena explains it’s due to her racism. The explanation of how she coaches the teacher to see her own role in white supremacy is EXACTLY what SEL will do to white children. First, get them to understand their own identity & role in systemic
racism/oppression, next you get them to make decisions based on their role, and finally make them agents for change and social justice (equity). They are focused heavily on adult SEL right now because they must get adults to push the indoctrination onto the children. #ExpelSEL
Second Step, a leading social emotional learning program, recommends the book Coaching for Equity by Elena Aguilar. This book is used in Universities to prepare teachers for a career in education. SEL IS CRITICAL RACE THEORY PRAXIS. #ExpelSEL
In @caselorg Transformative Social Emotional Learning brief, it states under "How Did We Get Here? Situating Equity and SEL in a Cultural and Historical Context", "Racial/ethnic and class issues continue to vex American society. Cultural analysis suggests that issues of
racism derive largely from an over-emphasis on the accumulation of wealth within American culture. Historically, this cultural value prompted some to exploit others for personal advancement. White elites promulgated racialized and cultural stereotypes to recruit poor and working
whites into a hierarchical economic system that exploited them, but also empowered them to oppress and further exploit people of color. Meanwhile, these stereotypes inculcated within people of color a sense
of dehumanization and willingness to accept marginalized status."
