When Churchill on 20 Aug 2018 in the speech to House of Commons stated 'Never in the field of human conflict was so much been owed by so many to so few', he was paying tribute to the enormous efforts made by fighter pilots AND THE BOMBER CREWS.
The bomber crews were singled out when his speech went on to say: All hearts go out to the fighter pilots, whose brilliant actions we see with our own eyes day after day…
… but we must never forget that all the time, night after night, month after month, our bomber sqns travel far into Germany, find tgts in the darkness by high navigational skills, aim attacks, often under heaviest fire, often with …
serious loss, deliberate, careful discrimination, and inflict shattering blows upon the whole of the technical and war making infrastructure of Nazi Power.
.. On no part of the RAF does the weight of the war fall more heavily than on the DAYLIGHT bombers, who will play an invaluable part in the case of invasion, and whose unflinching zeal it has been necessary in the meanwhile on numerous occasions to restrain.
This bit of speech is often forgotten after ill effects of strategic area bombing would lead even to Churchill not endorsing such use of airpower. In 1992 an RAF veterans orgn would seek to defend Bomber Harris with a statue that reads: ‘The nation owes them all an immense debt’.
Churchill used eg of success of RAF to promote confidence in the British war effort, stressing that it was better equipped for modern warfare than in the Great War with numerical strength of the army, naval command of the sea & scientific superiority in weaponry & intelligence.
The whole address may interest those historically inclined and for deeper understanding. parliament.uk/about/living-h…
The use of airpower for strategic bombing and it’s negative effects appears to elude Putin and his cdrs in the ongoing #RussiaUkraineConflict?
Sorry 20 August 1940 is the correct date of that speech and not 2018!!

Clearly Russia has ignored naval theory that tells naval cdrs: ‘sacrificing mobility by tying the fleet to a geographic point increases the odds that you will be found and struck first’.
‘Keep the fleet concentrated (strategically). Dispersing your own fleet (other than tactically) invites defeat in detail’. This is vital for AMD and defence in-depth.
‘Do not become decisively engaged with land-based forces unless you are ‘decisively superior’ in strength. Generally, land-based forces can generate greater rate of fire per unit time than naval forces of equal strength can, so larger forces needs to be brought to bear’.

Shud India insist on large warships after sinking of Russia’s Moskva asks ⁦@prakashmenon51⁩. Size of a warship or even of aircraft is governed by various factors esp roles envisaged & objectives meant for. ⁦@indiannavy⁩ ⁦@ThePrintIndiatheprint.in/opinion/should…
The article ignores concepts of Operational Warfare at Sea. The Russians ignored basic tenets of naval strategy and operations in narrow seas. Sacrificing mobility by tying the fleet to a geographic point increases the odds that it will be found and struck.
#Moskva debacle is a throwback to summer of 1941. Red Army was nearly annihilated during Nazi invasion of Soviet Union. Poorly led, improperly deployed, even finest and lavishly equipped Soviet formations fared poorly in their initial confrontations with the German army.

Deficiency assets always a dilemma & worked around in modern militaries by looking at issue fm op level perspectives. In this focus on strat objs is achieved by determining were to focus limited assets and to what ends. Classically ‘ends ways means’ than ‘means ways ends’
NATO's SACEUR & USEUCOM sought direct attks ag grd force tgts given analysis of Yugoslav ground forces as COG in ALLIED FORCE. Air Component Cdr recognising difficulty of severe damage to dispersed stealthy grd forces, judged attk on fixed tgts as best way with PGM.

Ben Gurion: ‘Of all deficiencies of our mil, lack of discipline most severe, and above all at the highest levels’. He ordered fmn of IDF in 1948 to get disparate paramilitary and militant orgs to work together. Current day org mirrors mil leadership necessities.
All branches of IDF report to single General Staff. CGS only serving officer with rank eqvt to NATO Lt Gen (Rav Aluf - Arch-General). Reports directly Def Min and indirectly to PM of Israel and cabinet. PM has Mil Secy. Arms headed by Aluf (literally first/leader).
Chiefs of Staff formally appointed by cabinet, based on Defense Minister's recommendation, for three years. Govt can vote to extend service to four (and on rare occasions even five) years.

I argue ‘From an op perspective, modern mil is not just about fielding modern units. it’s about whether force is modern in how it plans and operates?’
‘A mil can be modernised by acquiring platforms, equipment and weapons, but is it modern in: how it exercises and operates its forces, developing its command & control capabilities, employing its coord mechanisms, developing its intel and targeting support services?’

Gen @LtRajputs writes ‘Like the Indian Armed Forces, the Canadians have inherited much of their traditions, regimentation, and the indelible ‘spirit of the services’, from their colonial progenitors, the Imperial British Armed Forces’.
That said we must remember a time when the Canadians got it wrong when they cobbled together a tactical formation from other regts and branches than raise a Regiment in the Brit Commonwealth sense.
The Canadian Airborne Regt was ordered to be disbanded by the Minister of National Defence after public out cry over the Somalia Affair of 1993. This occurred during a period of severe defence budget cuts and internal reorganization.
