As of 2022, there are ~44 MILLION pending cases in India -
out of which 1 LAKH has been in the courts for more than 30 YEARS!
[A thread 🧵]
Few facts:
- The SC works for 193 days a year;
- 37% of the total posts for judges in Indian High Courts are lying vacant;
- Acc. to a 2018 NITIAayog paper, it would take the courts >324 years to clear the backlog [which was 29mn at the time];
These BIG numbers imply:
There is so much delay that if one person files a case, the next generation will get the result!
This is mainly due to:
[i] Poor infrastructure planning per the growth of population;
[ii] Shortage of judges at the lower judiciary level;
[iii] Very few remedies for a lot of civil matters;
This failure of speedy justice can cost heavily to society.
It is high time that reforms are brought in to update the judicial system.
Because currently, the concept of swift justice is elusive in India.
