Senior U.S. defense officials wrapped up a briefing a while ago describing how the Pentagon sees Russia's war in Ukraine on day 54.

Here are some of the highlights, including Russia's military footprint in Donbas and the latest shipments of U.S. weapons to Ukraine.
First off, DoD officials briefed on weapons going into Ukraine.

The turnaround from U.S. to the battlefield in Ukraine is moving as quickly as 48 - 72 hours.

But we're not getting much fidelity on whether U.S. is providing 🇺🇦 enough ammo.
Russian missile launches into Ukraine have plateaued around 30 a day over the course of the 54-day conflict.

That's way down from the 50 a day average 🇷🇺 was firing in the early going.

But Ukraine has been obscured by clouds, limiting U.S. visibility.
The Pentagon is being much more conservative in describing Russia's military operations in Donbas than Zelensky.

U.S. thinks this is a prelude to a bigger offensive, with 🇷🇺 still adding troops.

🇷🇺 is now up to 78 BTGs in Ukraine, up 13 from last week.
The US will deliver SEVEN planeloads of military aid bound for Ukraine to the region in the next 24 hr from Biden $800m package. Another flight arrived yday.

🇺🇸 is prioritizing deliveries of artillery systems, after Zelensky asked for as many as possible
The U.S. sees Russia's focus so far on Donetsk and Izyum

But this is a bit more conservative than Ukraine's military, which is describing Russian attacks all along defensive lines in and around Donbas, including in Kharkiv, Luhansk, and Donetsk.
Russia added 2 battalion tactical groups into Ukraine in the last 24 hr, US believes.

🇷🇺 is massing aviation & combat support in Belarus & Western Russia.

That's a lesson learned from the Kyiv campaign, where Russia lacked proper logistical support.
Russia still has a lot of its arsenal left for the Ukraine fight, including aviation & ballistic missiles.

But it's down to just 65 % of the 120 BTGs it started with before the invasion.

Perhaps up to 20 % of them were refitting outside 🇺🇦 recently.
Russia has a shorter logistical tail to fight in Donbas, since it is right on the border and more conducive to tank warfare, officials said.

But it still has 11 BTGs tied down in besieged Mariupol, which 🇷🇺 wants to seize to build a land bridge to Crimea
U.S. believes that Russia is targeting last holdout at Mariupol's steel factory with long-range fires.

🇺🇦 said Tu-22M3 long-range strategic bombers are firing on Mariupol.

It's not clear 🇷🇺 pilots are entering 🇺🇦 airspace with air defense still active
Here's the 🇷🇺 gameplan, in a nutshell:

🇷🇺 military is “trying to learn and adapt to some of the mistakes they made earlier in the war," especially Kyiv, per sr US defense official said.

Russia intends "to come both from north & south and to cut off the Donbas,” official added
That's it for today.

Senior U.S. defense officials wrapped up a briefing a little while ago with an update on Russia's war in Ukraine. It's now Day 57.

Here's what we learned, including new details on Biden's brand new $800 million military aid package and Russia's continued push on Donbas.
Let's start with the big news: Biden's $800m military aid for 🇺🇦

Ukraine now has enough artillery for 5 battalions. It should start arriving this weekend

🇺🇸 has now given $3.4bn in military aid to 🇺🇦 since 🇷🇺 invasion – nearly HALF in the past 2 weeks.
The U.S. is providing 121 Phoenix Ghost tactical drones to Ukraine.

Never heard of it? That's because the Air Force just developed the Switchblade-like weapon for Ukraine to fend off Russia.

Officials said it's a similar kamikaze drone.

A senior U.S. defense officials wrapped up a briefing a while ago describing how the Pentagon sees Russia's war in Ukraine on day 56.

Here are some of the highlights, including news on U.S. military training and fighter jet parts for Ukraine.
First off, some clarification, Ukraine has NOT received new fixed-wing aircraft from Europe, as DoD indicated Tuesday.

But Ukraine has managed to put 20 more fighters back in the skies with new parts from European partners. MiGs could also be on the way
The U.S. has also begun training for Ukrainian military advisors on US howitzers somewhere in Europe that should last a week

Ukraine will have 40,000 rounds for 155mm howitzer artillery. More is likely on the way from ANOTHER $800 million in military aid

Zelensky, tonight: “In this war, the Russian army will forever inscribe itself in world history as perhaps the most barbaric and inhuman army in the world … And this is vileness, which will mark the Russian state as a source of absolute evil for generations.”
Zelensky, contined: "Purposefully killing civilians, destroying residential neighborhoods, civilian infrastructure, using all kinds of weapons for this, including those prohibited by international conventions, is the signature of the Russian army."
Zelensky also increasingly frustrated tonight with the pace of Western weapons deliveries to Ukraine.

"It is unfair that Ukraine is still forced to ask for what its partners have been storing somewhere for years."

NEW: Zelensky claims Ukraine would have defeated Russia by now if West had granted all 🇺🇦 weapons requests.

“We would have restored peace and liberated our territory,” Zelensky said. “Because the superiority of the Ukrainian military in tactics and wisdom is quite obvious.“
“If we had access to all the weapons we need, which our partners have and which are comparable to the weapons used by Russia, we would have ended this war,” Zelensky said.
Here’s Zelensky’s full weapons wish list from a week ago, just hours before Biden agreed to a new $800 million military aid package for Ukraine.

Biden also said today more artillery is incoming to Ukraine in addition to the 18 howitzers already on the way

JUST IN: Ukraine’s President Zelensky said Russian troops have “begun” the battle for the Donbas region, marking a major new offensive in the 54-day war.

A significant part of Russia’s troop presence in Ukraine is concentrated in the Donbas for the offensive, Zelensky said.
Other top Ukrainian officials are echoing this point. Ukrainian troops held off attacks by Russian forces all weekend in Luhansk region.

🇷🇺 sent 11 more BTGs into 🇺🇦 this weekend, putting tally up to 76 BTGs in country. 11 more are tied down in Mariupol
Reports of heavy Russian artillery also extending to Ukraine’s southern region
