Why is #DarkMAGA so captivating? @conan_esq articulated the allure as Byronic. I don’t deny the irresistible mystique but I think the appeal lies in the substance: homecoming. To break the vicious cycle of decline & controlled demolition & rent-seeking by restoring order
The ultimate restoration, Christ’s 2nd coming, is too sublime to compare to politics. Plus we aren’t concerned w bringing about utopia but ending dystopia. The best example of this is the tragedy of Telemachus, a guy whose home & inheritance was wasted for most of his life…
until his dad Odysseus returned, reestablished himself & recruited loyal men to end the extortionate scheme Penelope’s suitors had going during his decade-long absence. While Penelope stayed chaste awaiting her husband’s return, their home, estate & customs were trashed
Our society tracks this story, down to the archetypes involved. I guess we all sense something is deeply amiss & intuited how the story ends or at least how it can & ought to end. Let’s look at some characters so we can literally put a name to what plagues us
Antinous: lead suitor, bloodthirsty as he stokes conflict between subjects for his own enjoyment & ends (he pummels a disguised Odysseus). Even the other suitors chafe at his behavior. He recommends the suitors kill Telemachus before their original plot can be revealed.
Eurymachus: co-lead suitor, arrogant, gluttonous, & highly deceitful yet charming; emphasizes that he grew up w Odysseus as he arranges for the murder of his son. Gives the biggest gifts, liked by Penelope’s family as he behaves toward her patriarchy & is a local
Leodes: local priest who officiates all meals & events for suitors, thus complicit in their gluttony, disrespect of Ithakan custom (xenia).
