1| I always wanted to study Journalism, but after an exchange year in GA🍑, I decided to deepen my interest for cultures through a B.A. in International Relations.

2| As part of my work, I wrote articles such as #homonationalism, the history of racial segregation in the U.S., the changing beauty standards and anti-Asian hate.

3| After a M.A. in Current Democracies, I worked as a Research Assistant for @javiersolana, former Secretary-General of NATO, at @EsadeGeo. As part of my job, I had to edit a newsletter with relevant news of the day and I had to prepare and fact-check dossiers about global topics

4 | During the pandemic, I also edited #Dixoutra, a weekly newsletter about pressing cultural, social and political topics, providing context and explanations for these issues.

5 | Despite my background, I needed a base in journalism, so I applied to the @FulbrightPrgrm and to the @columbiajourn. My interest during the master has been stories about American fault lines, and I’ve provided a global perspective while covering a country I deeply understand.

6 | As part of the program, I’ve taken courses such as Reporting, where I received Honors, Investigative Techniques, Subcultures, Ideas and Pop culture. I've honed my writing, editing and fact-checking skills under the supervision of @jessbruder, @zeynep, @a_stille and @MarlowNYC

7 | I’ve written stories about the issues faced by #DACA recipients, the conservative backlash after erosions of the gender binary or the challenges of aging as a drag queen, and I completed a master’s thesis on youth loneliness. You can read them in 👇🏽alexmaronoporto.com

8 | I’ve produced a video profile of a trans man drag queen and a short-doc of the challenges faced by LGBTQ religious people for the video module, where I also received Honors. I’m also part of @NAHJ and @nlgja student chapters.

9 | Living in different countries such as Spain, France or the U.S. has helped me become an adaptative person, and studying at Columbia has prepared me to be a multimedia cultural writer with solid writing, video, editing, fact- checking, interviewing and investigative skills.

10 | Additionally, I’m fluent in Spanish, Galician and English, and I have a conversational level in French. I also have previous photo experience.

11 | My diverse interests in politics, socio-cultural issues, entertainment and global affairs, as well as my interdisciplinary background, would adapt to any position. Overall, I’m a curious individual who loves discovering new topics and uplifting underserved communities.

12 | As I said before, I'm a Fulbright scholar, so I will have work authorization in May if I receive a job offer before graduation (May 18.) ✨

13 | In all, I think that being a foreigner who has greatly covered American society, culture and politics, I can provide a fresh perspective on the pressing issues that shape the country. I'm just looking for an opportunity to continue working while learning in a place I love!
