Unbelievably, the newly identified Covid cases in Shanghai increased yesterday
Adding to that trend, friends in several areas reported new cases in apartment buildings and communities that have been under strict lockdown for weeks
We have the strictest imaginable lockdown conditions in Shanghai, and still have this massive setback of a rise in new Covid cases.
How can the virus, in these conditions, continue to survive and spread?
And if it can, in these conditions, how can our hope continue to survive?
Social media in Shanghai has been flooded this weekend with despair, sorrow, and anger
It was a rainy morning in Shanghai today and they called us down to stand in a line to do the administered PCR test
We didn’t go down
And I watched who did, it was less than 30 that I saw, out of thousands in our community
Everyone else demanded to do the home tests
We did too, and tested negative again…
I have lost the energy to keep track of how many times we tested negative during this lockdown - I expect we are close to 30 consecutive tests, all negative
We haven’t gone down to do the PCR tests in more than a week
My health code (government QR code) is still showing green with no asterisk, which is the “big data” way of showing I have zero risk and should be allowed out freely
35 days of Covid lockdown in Shanghai with countless consecutive negative tests
Still not allowed to leave our front door
Still frustrated by food and water deliveries not returning to normal
Still with no idea of when this will end
Still very angry
The one good development has been that some areas of the city seem to be doing better with fewer cases and less restrictions
A key thing to remember about our city is that it is huge and the situation is different everywhere - I am only sharing our situation where I live
One last important thing: there are videos/pictures that seem to show suicide, violence, starvation, and other types of cruelty happening now in Shanghai
Please try to verify the source and authenticity before sharing
If it’s true, it’s true - but please check before sharing

Following a moment of inspiration, we started a broth/stock group in our apartment community
People who have veggies which are nearing the time of being beyond the point you would normally use them, but which are still good, can give them instead of throwing them away
They can leave them any time before 3 pm outside our door
And we will use the good ones to make a soup broth so that they don’t go to waste
2 people in our apartment community tested positive
1 has recovered during their time in central quarantine, and has come back home for a monitoring period
A few people in our apartment community were unhappy about a Covid patient coming back here, but most were supportive and the security guards let that person in
I’m sure he or she is very happy to be home
The conditions in the central quarantine areas are pretty bad from all of the first-hand information that I have seen and heard
This week it was raining in Shanghai for several days and we saw many videos of temporary central quarantine areas that were leaking rain in rooms
Today, the new policy went into effect that classifies each house/apartment community into three categories according to the risk level
We were classified as the highest risk level
We are in the “locked down” tier, with the highest restrictions
The best case scenario is that we can’t leave our apartment door for the next week, then are allowed out of our door, but not our community, for another week
If we’re lucky during the next 2 weeks, with no new positive cases close to us, we will have our risk level downgraded to “precautionary”, which means we can leave our community, but must still adhere to restrictions, and can be changed back to “locked down” if there’s a positive
Before we were allowed to leave our building (but not community) to get deliveries - no more; now we are not allowed out of our apartment door
Each day 2 volunteers from each building are allowed out to collect deliveries for the whole building (I’m a volunteer)
We have to wear the full white suit during the process - mine was just delivered to me - and we only have a 2 hour window in the afternoon
If you have a delivery in the morning, for example of meat (if you are lucky enough to get that), it will sit at the gate until it is our time in the afternoon to get the delivery
The temperature in Shanghai right now, at 5 pm, is 80 F
We received an official notice this morning that there were a dozen people in our apartment community who have tested positive
It was the first time we had this kind of official notice, which also listed the buildings and apartment numbers
We knew there were positive cases already, because people in the PPE suits had closed several buildings and were guarding the doors, but the high number was surprising
As far as we can tell, the positive cases are all still at home, and haven’t been taken to central quarantine
With the official notice, we are expecting some new rules later today that will probably be more restrictive
Currently, we’re allowed out of our apartment door to take out garbage, pick up deliveries, and get tested - that all might change
