I keep hearing from GOP lawmakers that they "just want to return to a Judeo-Christian idea of men being men and women being women." So let's talk about that "Judeo" part for a moment (because it's a lot queerer and less binary than y'all seem to think). 🧵🏳️‍⚧️ #aRainbowThread 1/
The most central couple in the bible is Abraham & Sarah, the founders of the Jewish people. And they were both intersex! Or non-binary! Or both! Millennia ago the rabbis of the Talmud shared an ancient tradition of this (Yevamot 64a-b).

2/
In fact, the rabbis of the Talmud even get into an argument as to which category of (the very much non binary) sex/gender spectrum Abraham and Sarah fall into! Don't believe me that ancient Jews didn't see gender as a binary? Check out the 2000yo sacred Mishnah Bikurim 4:1-4

3/
The contemporaries and study partners of the historical Jesus are the rabbis of the Mishnah, and they described SIX genders/sexes, not two. Now, don't get me wrong--this is still a text with lots of misogyny. But it also clearly shows that we *never* saw gender as a binary. 4/
Want to get even queerer? Adam was "made in God's image", which according to Breishit Rabbah 8:1 means: "At the moment when the Holy Blessed One created the first adam, God created them as an androginos, as it is written: 'male and female God created them'. 5/
Think about that: if adam harishon (the first human-thing) was made in God's image, and adam was described as (this is the literal word in Hebrew) 'androginus', that means that according to the ancient rabbis, GOD IS NON-BINARY. 6/
There are *so* many queer ancestors in Jewish tradition. How differently would we understand the story of Esther if we read Mordecai as a trans-man? Because 1600 years ago Jews shared an ancient tradition that Mordecai nursed Esther from his own breasts when she was a baby. 7/
Did you know that Dinah, daughter of Jacob and Leah, was a trans-woman? Not only that: God is the one who helped her transition! From the 1400yo Tanchuma: "God heard her prayer and converted...her...into a female." 8/
Dinah's moment of gender transition into a woman is right there in the Hebrew text if you know to look for it--and the ancient rabbis did. The Torah says "afterwards [achar, masc] she bore a daughter". The verse starts with the masc 'achar', yet finishes with 'daughter Dinah'. 9/
All of these amazing texts that I've mentioned can be found in the awe-inspiring "A Rainbow Thread: An Anthology of Queer Jewish Texts from the First Century to 1969" by Noam Sienna. BUY THIS BOOK!!! 10/ printocraftpress.com/product/a-rain…
Want to hear the heartwarming story of Berel-Beyle, a trans man whose transition was lovingly supported by his Jewish shtetl in Ukraine 150yo ago? Check out this other #aRainbowThread
And finally, if you're looking to support trans kids in Missouri, please donate to @PROMOMissouri , who are standing in the front lines trying to protect our children. promoonline.org/campaigns/dona…
Back to Dinah for a moment, and this is important: because if God helped Dinah to transition--literally while she was still in the womb--then helping trans kids get access to puberty blockers and HRT is absolutely a religious obligation (mitzvah) for Jews.
This 6-3 Court seems to almost exclusively prioritize 'religious liberty'. And so I want to be clear: laws that prevent Jewish trans kids from transitioning are a violation of their 1st Amendment rights, and an imposition of governmental Christianity on me and my family.

Want to be inspired in this broken world? Three years ago a few of us dreamed up a camp for trans & LGBTQ kids; a place where every camper and every counselor is queer; an oasis in the storm of Red State hate. #ProtectTransKids 1/
We are saving lives with campfires, arts & crafts, and the power of intergenerational queer community. It is a place where every kid is LGBTQ, where their counselors (who become their heroes) are LGBTQ, and where kids can dream of a better world. 2/
In our first summer, we had 100 campers who came to our little camp in the Midwest (we had a camper from Alaska!). Last year, we moved to a bigger site and had 150 kids, 2nd-11th grades, who came to us from 33 different States! 3/

🧵After a break, we're back with Rep Ben Baker's bigoted, hateful #HB2355, which would force trans kids to become public spectacles in their schools....just to poop. Ps-Ben Baker is a frequent-flier sponsor of these transphobic bills. #ProtectTransKids #MOLeg 1/
Rep @Ashley4MO questioning #HB2355 sponsor Ben Baker, and pointing out the very real harm and violence faced by trans kids because of this bill (and other bills being pushed by GOP legislators). 2/
@Ashley4MO Another of the folks who have been coming for years to #ProtectTransKids in Missouri is up testifying. Elizabeth Fuchs (sp?), saying the words all of us feel: "I've come here and said everything! I've brought my kids, I've begged you, I've brought science. WHAT ELSE CAN I DO?" 3/

Ok, here we go: Live-thread on Missouri #SB728, which would force teachers in public schools to out queer kids to abusive parents, and would embolden and empower the worst bullies in our schools, while tying the hands of teachers trying to #ProtectTransKids. #MOleg 1/
The bill sponsor, Senator Koenig, is up first with his presentation of the bill. He's explaining the ways that this bill will force schools to out queer students to unsupportive parents and will allow bigots to sue schools are trying to protect trans kids. 2/
The first up to question Sen Koenig is Sen @LaurenArthurMO. For those who don't know, Democrats in Missouri have almost no power, but they fight with everything they have to protect our kids. And no shade to the men, but: the Democratic Women electeds in our State are 🔥🔥🔥🔥3/

Live-thread on Missouri's **NINE** bigoted bills targeting trans kids and LGBTQ Missourians. We're starting off with SB728, a "forced outing/don't say gay" law for public schools in the State 1/ #ProtectTransKids #MOLeg
First up is a bill dealing with Missouri's standardized testing, and the way it interacts with charter schools. It's always wild to watch our legislators actually seem to be interested in a topic, and care about its impact on actual humans (rather than just 'getting the libs!')
Originally we were going to hear an atrocious, racist, "anti-crt/don't say gay" bill today #SB770, but it's been cut without notice. Which, unfortunately, doesn't mean it's gone away, but instead that we're going to have to come back for another hearing on it on another day. 3/

If you're a progressive and aren't actively and vocally working to deconstruct your own internalized antisemitism right now, please understand that the vast majority of American Jews are feeling deeply abandoned by you, and unsafe with you. 1/
And if you're comforting yourself by hiding behind the apologetics of the small minority of American Jews who are "anti-Zionist", please understand that this is tokenization no different than when GOPers hide behind the small percentage of minorities who vote with them. 2/
And dear God, if you aren't Jewish, please please please don't try to explain and define antisemitism and anti-Zionism to me or to anyone else. Stop, listen, learn, deconstruct. 3/

The extent of the security needs for American Jews and American Jewish institutions isn't normal, it shouldn't be ok, and *far* too many non-Jews have no clue. 1/
A medium sized synagogue--think the size of a neighborhood church--will usually have $100,000-200,000 in security needs, year after year. 2/
Ballasts to prevent trucks from driving into us during prayer; budgets going to armed security instead of edu; metal detectors before larger events. You will *never* find a Jewish institution with its doors unlocked...and every church I've ever walked into has been open. 3/
