❗️ Big business and politicians are increasingly using vexatious legal threats known as ‘SLAPPs’ to silence workers and activists across Europe
Most cases are dismissed, withdrawn or settled but not before lengthy processes with huge financial and psychological impacts #SLAPPs
The tactic is being used to prevent legitimate trade union action
In France, three trade union activists were unsuccessfully sued for defamation after having denounced poor working conditions among foreign workers in agriculture
In Finland, a lawful strike by Finnair workers was cancelled after being subject to a legal challenge by the employer
A court subsequently found the challenge to be illegal. Finnair subsequently paid the union involved 50,000 Euro along with legal costs proliitto.fi/fi/ajankohtais…
In Croatia, public broadcaster HRT opened legal proceedings against the presidents of its journalists’ trade unions between Christmas Day and New Years’ Eve in 2019, seeking 67,000 Euro in fines
Daphne Caruana Galizia, who was murdered for her investigative journalism, received more than any other individual or organisation
No EU member state has taken action against SLAPPs but @VeraJourova will tomorrow present a draft directive
It's crucial the proposal protects workers' rights
🗣️SLAPP lawsuits are being exploited by businesses to intimidate and attack workers and trade unionists exercising basic democratic rights like the freedom of expression and the right to collective action. This has to end - @IsaSchoemann
🗣️Over the past 2 years, under the far-right government in Slovenia, trade unions and reporters have been attacked with SLAPP lawsuits
This is a tactic to frighten citizens, stop protests and shut down critical thinking. It is jeopardising democracy - @TeaJarc
📰EU must stop the silencing of workers with baseless legal threats #SLAPPs
The vulnerability of migrant workers is too often exploited by rogue employers
The @EU_Commission has announced measures that will help prevent abuse - but only for a lucky few 👇
The @EU_Commission policy includes the right of workers to change employer without losing their work permit and penalties for employers who don’t respect workers’ rights
This is welcome but only applies to a limited number of people who qualify for a new single EU work permit
Many undocumented workers already in the EU will continue to be exploited in the shadow economy
The fastest and fairest solution to Europe's labour shortage would be to give work and residency permits to undocumented migrants and further expand legal pathways to labour migration
🇺🇦 There is growing evidence of sexual violence, including rape, being used as a war weapon in Ukraine
The accessibility of sexual and reproductive health care in countries hosting refugees deserves our urgent attention #StandWithUkraine️ 👇
The vulnerability of women refugees fleeing the war in Ukraine puts the spotlight on longstanding deficits and the ongoing deterioration of women and girls’ sexual and reproductive rights in the EU
The effective ban of abortions in Poland is one of the most drastic examples
The regression of women and girls’ fundamental rights to reproductive and sexual health care, including abortions, in several EU member states must be stopped and repealed as a matter of urgency
This is a very good proposal and a true victory for those working for labour rights and stronger social protection
This is a really important day for Social Europe. We can't let these big platforms decide workers' rights in Europe 🗣️@kimvsparrentak
.@kimvsparrentak says @EU_Commission proposals on transparency in the use of algorithms by platforms has the potential to be one of the most important advances for workers in the digital era
"Platforms will no longer be able to hide behind their algorithms"
