At the Hanwell School information Session: I will be adding notes as I hear them. This is an informational thread. There is about 60 people here in the room plus presenters. There is an excitement but first question I heard was, is there a sidewalk or crosswalk at the door.
/ Presentation being called to order. The principal Pierre Plourde and vice Tarah Gauvin have introduced themselves. Made a joke that he hopes to have more staff soon. ;). More people rolling in, about 70 people now. Tarah just seen inside the school and stated it was amazing.
/ This will be a short presentation, but assured there is time for questions afterwards. **NOTE the same presentation will be tomorrow** 6:30-7:30. A lot of young families, I feel like I am the oldest.
/ School is going to Open in Sept for classes, and grand opening for the community late August/early Sept. This school will be a community school, not just for the kids the Pierre stated. We will walk into the School into a large open area. A large common area for the comminity.
Transportation and Safety will be the first topic brought up as Pierre stated he was asked this a lot. There will be 2 entry points into the building, 1 for busses, 1 for community to drop off their students. Showing off the quick drive through drop off, plus a designated area.
/ The bus driveway will be used only during certain times, apart from those times, the bus driveway can be used by community. **All students will be provided transportation to and from the School**. asdpwbp.nbed.nb.ca/Eligibility to see when and where later as we get closer to start.
/ **Tentative** school schedule is 7:45am drop off. Dismissal times for K-2 1:50pm dismissal, and 2:40pm dismissal for 3-8. AGAIN VERY TENTATIVE as it depends on transportation. Pierre implored we all understand that this is tentative. We will know more in the next month.
/ Important Dates: Aug 24-26 Community celebrations/tours. Sept 6-12 Staggered entry. Sept 12 all students at school.
Ownership of the Building is handed to the School Aug 24 *Tentative of course*. Special note, a new format school website will be coming, and will have info.
/ There will/may be 3 classes per grade. 2 French immersion and 1 Prime. Total 475 Students. There will be an early child hood room at the school as well. PreSchool at the school, Little Munchkins Preschool.
/ Lori and Leslie from Little Munchkins are now talking, ages 3-4 will be the ages. There is no registration at this time, but they have a wait list as they prepare the licensing. They can't advertise the times, or anything, if you want it, please register ASAP.
/ Preschool will be year long, through summer, holidays etc. They will share more info when they learn more. They are a separate enterprise than the school, but will have space in the school for them.
/ The classroom design will be flexible. There are no desks in this building. There are tables, work stations but no desks, not even desks for the teachers. They have workstations. There will be wireless throughout building so projects, students and teachers can move anywhere.
/ Pierre shared a video to give an idea. I found it here. It truly looks awesome, please watch. There will also be breakout rooms for teachers and students.
/ There will be a learning commons. It again seems pretty incredible. A great place for people to do presentations.
/ We will have a playground. @HanwellNB donated over $300 to have a playground (I think it was $340k) and Pierre stated how rare that is, most schools are still fundraising (Personal note, thanks to previous council, it wasn't mine haha).
/ There will be a sensory area of the playground, and typical playground stuff. Looks good of course. Sports: WIth this school, we will have 2 full size gyms. We can run 4 basketball classes at the same time. It will have a climbing wall maybe, and an interactive wall.
/ Something like this. This is good for gym class, but also teachers to use interactive education. Honestly, this is amazing. Pierre stated he really wants physical active kids, teachers for creativity. So he is taking full advantage.
/ 2 Music labs, huge studios, full band equipment. Performance centre, stage seating up to 500people. Wood shop, Tech lab, Cafeteria, hot meal service, and milk program *free*. A culinary lab, and so much more. *Note we mayn't have all the staff to do all this day 1...
/ , but the rooms/equipment will be there. #GetInvolved! May 2023 they will host 800-1000 teachers there. Other organizations are looking to host events here. **Businesses take note!**
/ outside. Noting that Pierre came from George Street, you can already know how happy he is about outside. Outdoor playground, 2 basketball courts, Large games, Tennis/Pickle Ball - not just for kids but community.. designated days for kids, and for community!
/ A lot of thanks to previous council for getting the playground, and PE teachers are pretty excited about this. Plus our Trails are open to kids for science etc. Logo poll so far (open still of course): 1. Bear, 2 Hawks, 3. Fox/wolf etc. Bear mockup logos look cute still open
/ Pierre ending stating that to talk about it, has nothing on seeing it. Formal presentation done at 7:20pm. Q: Will K be eating in classroom, or cafe. A. In the cafe.
/ Q: Same classroom or moving around? A: They are working out answers. But majority in 1 class but hoping teachers take kids to other areas and take advantage of all the facilities. Q: FI vs Prime how will it be decided? A: How parents sign up.
'
/ Q: will there be bathroom inside the K room? A: Yes there will be a bathroom in the K room. All classrooms seem to even have sinks, ALL OF THEM. (obviously they are discovering things too),
/ Q: Will the Playground be fenced? A: There is a line of fencing by the tree line. (concerns of wildlife seems to be the thinking to the answer).
/ Q: Average Class size? A: Will depend on the grade level. Pierre is thinking 20-23 tops but really doesn't know yet. Q: Cafe access is being staggered? by age is Playground? A: Yes. It will be staggered by age. Q: Clubs for older kids? A: YES, already getting volunteers.
/ Personal note: Well attended event. Looks exciting. Great presentation. We should be proud of all who got this for us. But GET INVOLVED!! There are more things that need to be figured out I am sure. Thanks all who put this together. /END
@HanwellSchool tagging you so you can see I wrote all this. Kudos, good presentation.
