It is tempting to think #freespeech is going to solve all problems. As a platform, @Twitter has responsibilities to lots of people.
I have worked in the trenches of content and policy & have the scars and nightmares to remind me.
It’s always tempting to think issues are black and white, when it’s really all about the grey.
Some important things to consider on the way to that free marketplace of ideas…
Does @elonmusk think that videos of babies and young children being exploited is free speech? Has he seen or read articles like this one? buzzfeednews.com/article/charli…
Worse, some of these videos and comments thereof became a haven for people interested in child pornography.
And, oh, just wait until the advertisers come knocking with their interpretation of what is acceptable speech.
I have actually had surreal arguments whether videos of goats having sex made by John Green (a famous Youtuber!) were “safe enough” for advertising!!
A lot of Google’s advertisers didn’t think so.
Finally, it is one thing to say that @Twitter should not “censor” content.
But when a famous politician calls for violence and Twitter amplifies that to hundreds of millions of people *who aren’t even following him*, who in this world thinks that @Twitter isn’t culpable?
Complex issues require complex and nuanced answers.
I look forward to these.
