Today, the Republic of #Moldova marks National Flag day, which commorates the day the Soviet era flag was replaced by the traditional tricolour.
A thread on how the adoption of the new flag was received in #Transnistria 👇
The passing of the tricolour was a contentious issue at the time. In the cities of Tiraspol, Bender, and Rîbnița the flag was labelled a "fascist symbol" due to its similarities with the Romanian flag
The City authorities in Tiraspol, Bender, and Rîbnița moved quickly to outlaw it 👇
In the rural districts of #Transnistria the tricolour was even more divisive. In Slobozia, the People's Deputies from the District Soviet opposed the flag, while the executive Committee supported it. Eventually, people stormed the Committee's building and removed the flag
In Camenca, the District authorities supported the tricolour. However, the Rîbnița branch of the OSTK organized several rallies against the flag. Eventually, in May 1990, protestors stormed the District Soviet building and removed the flag
In Grigoriopol, the District Soviet banned the flag. However, several village Soviets ignored the ban and continued to fly the tricolour. The District's local newspaper reported that conflicts between villagers and OSTK members sent to remove the flag were common
The city authorities in Dubăsari banned the flag only in the summer of 1990. However, the District authorities, who's official buildings were located in the city, continued to fly it. This annoyed the city's branch of the OSTK
